This week, July 19-25, is Black Maternal Mental Health Week, hosted by Shades of Blue Project ().

Studies show that Black women and birthing people are more likely to have their mental health concerns dismissed or go undiagnosed, which further adds to a crisis that is both preventable and addressable.

Our Community Doula Program doulas provide culturally-matched care, offer screenings for postpartum mood disorders, and stand beside you every step of the way—before, during, and after birth.

If your birth left you carrying more than you expected, you are not alone, and what happened to you matters.

This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week, observed worldwide from July 13–19.

Birth trauma is more common than most people realize. Research suggests a third to a fourth of mothers in the US describe their birth as traumatic, and roughly 1 in 20 develop symptoms of birth-related PTSD. It doesn't take a medical emergency to cause harm. Feeling unheard, losing a say in your own care, or having a procedure done without real consent can be traumatic as well.

This is one of the ways doulas can make a difference. A trained doula stays with a birthing person through labor, helps them understand their options and ask questions, and helps families feel heard. Research shows this kind of continuous support lowers the chance of an unplanned cesarean and leads to fewer people describing their birth as a negative experience.

At CDP, we match families who receive Medicaid with doulas who share their language and understand their community. All birthing people deserve to be heard, informed, and supported through one of the biggest moments of their life.

"Children start watching us and picking up on our driving habits the moment they turn forward-facing. We need to teach kids how to be good passengers, always buckling up and speaking up when we see something that jeopardizes our safety."
