The S&P 500 reached new highs as several key market headwinds began to ease. Ice Cream With Ed Mitchell 🍦
By H.L., Host of Crestview Spotlight
I’m H.L., host of Crestview Spotlight. I ask questions, meet interesting people who help our community every day, and share what I learn with other youth.
Would you keep going with your idea if you were told no for two years? Mr. Ed Mitchell did, and it eventually led to Dinner At Dad's being named Nonprofit of the Year by the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce. I recently sat down with him to learn more about it.
Feeding Our Neighbors
When I asked why he wanted to start Dinner at Dad’s, Mr. Mitchell said he had been thinking about it for a while. A friend of his was giving away hamburgers and hot dogs in Fort Walton Beach, and that gave him the idea to bring something similar to Crestview.
Finding a place wasn't easy. For two years, he searched before a small church offered their space.
At first they focused on feeding the homeless. Now he says anyone who's hungry is welcome.
Like he said, “Who does the Bible say is our neighbor? Anybody who has a need that we can help.”
Mr. Mitchell said receiving Nonprofit of the Year was “an incredible honor,” but made it clear that recognition isn’t what motivates him. “I don’t do it for trophies and awards,” he said. “I do it for people, and that’s my award.”
But what exactly happens there?
When you walk in, there's a board listing your options. You can have as much as you want until you're full, and you can also stop by to grab food to go. Also, if there are any breads or produce available, people who come are free to get some of what's there.
Dinner at Dad’s really does help people. Mr. Mitchell told me about one woman who started coming around the time they opened. She was homeless, living under a house, but over the years he watched her get a job, a house, a car, and a baby. She is now one of the volunteers at Dinner at Dad’s.
He also shared what he loves most about what he does. He said it's “seeing hungry people full with smiles on their faces.”
When I asked how kids my age can help, he said to first ask for a parent or guardian's permission, and then have them contact him. An adult must stay with them while they volunteer.
Another way to help is by providing financial support or donating food. You can go to Dinner at Dad’s page and message him, visit the website at dinneratdadsministries.org, or email [email protected].
I'm glad I got to meet Mr. Ed Mitchell. I can't wait to see who I have ice cream with next!
