A bloodhound can be a critical tool when someone is missing, lost, injured, or fleeing on foot.
What makes a trained bloodhound team different is its specialty: following the scent of a specific person. Given a scent article, the dog can work a trail through changing terrain and competing human odors, helping search teams follow where that person went.
Other police K-9s may also track people, and many are trained for different jobs such as patrol, detection, or apprehension. A bloodhound team brings a focused man-trailing capability that can complement those teams and give officers and rescuers another way to find someone who needs help.
A dog’s nose can help bring a person home. That’s why bloodhound teams matter.
When an officer makes a lawful traffic stop, the driver is generally required by state law to provide their driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance, and to identify themselves as required by that law.
The U.S. Supreme Court has also held that an officer may order the driver out of a lawfully stopped vehicle. That authority extends to passengers, too.
Refusing a lawful exit order can escalate the encounter and may lead to arrest or charges such as obstruction or resisting, depending on the state and the circumstances. The exact requirements and consequences vary by jurisdiction, but arguing roadside rarely improves the situation. Comply, keep your hands visible, and challenge the legality of the stop through the proper process afterward.
Know the law. Know your responsibilities.

“I just got promoted.”
You can have all the buts you want. That’s fine. And here is my butt:
Early in my career, I learned that sometimes you don’t realize how bad an agency is until you’re already working there. At my first two agencies, I eventually knew it was time to move on. I wasn’t going down with a sinking ship.
There were consequences. I had to go through the police academy three times. Was I a little impatient? Yes. But becoming a cop 25 years ago was so difficult that I was willing to do whatever it took, go wherever I had to, and pay whatever price was necessary to build the law-enforcement career I wanted.
You don’t have to leave. You can justify staying. Just remember: inaction has consequences, too.
Your coworkers may tell you the grass isn’t greener on the other side. Sometimes that’s coming from the “misery loves company” crowd.
Do what’s best for you. Do what’s best for your family. Stop worrying about what people will think, whether you’ll have to make new friends, or whether you owe the agency something.
Your excuses can keep you stuck. At the end of your career, you may regret what you could have done, where you could have gone, and who you could have become.
Thank God for patrol ri**es. Thank God for the bravery of the men and women who carry them.
Remember, a tool by itself doesn’t win a gunfight. The tool, combined with training, can help. That training has to happen at every level: in the classroom, through practical field work, and by constantly thinking about how to win a gunfight.

Train, and invest in yourself.
There wasn’t much training available when I started 25 years ago. There’s a lot more now. Some courses are great. Some aren’t. But there’s something to learn from every course if you pay attention.
The cops you admire didn’t wait around for their administration to send them to training. They used their own time and money because they wanted to become better at the job.
I know this won’t speak to every cop. But if you want to become that kind of cop, this is for you.
And I know some traffic guys are going to find this offensive. They may think writing tickets is the highest form of police work. That’s fine. I’m not here to argue with you. Everybody gets to choose how they do the job.
I’m trying to give you clarity. I’ve spent years looking at this and trying to understand why these suggestions are wrong. I’m not trying to sound cocky. I’ve done the research, and this is what I believe can help you get where you want to be.
That’s why I make this training.
