While in Japan, I took a solo trip to Kyoto via the Shinkansen, the train ride itself was an experience. I was amazed by how impeccably clean everything was, how intuitive the stations were to navigate, and how unbelievably fast the train traveled. Covering roughly 240 miles in just over two hours felt surreal.

Once in Kyoto, I spent the day exploring centuries-old temples and shrines, all within walking distance of my beautifully modern hotel. The contrast between ancient tradition and contemporary design was something I found throughout the city.

I also took a cab to Fushimi Inari Taisha to experience it at sunset. Watching the light fade across the shrine grounds was both breathtaking and humbling. There was a quiet sense of history and reverence that made me slow down and simply take it all in.

Kyoto felt timeless, peaceful, and deeply inspiring, and exploring it on my own made the journey even more meaningful.

The food in Japan deserved its own post. Some of our favorite memories came from the meals.

In Tokyo, we went to two incredible Michelin-starred restaurants with full omakase-style menus. At Udatsu Sushi, tucked away down an unmarked alley, we were led into a private dining room for a completely vegetarian sushi experience. Every course felt like a tiny work of art, from pickled daikon rolls to delicate vegetable nigiri.

We also dined at Daigo, a shojin ryori restaurants, serving refined Buddhist-inspired vegetarian kaiseki focused on seasonal ingredients, mindfulness, and the beauty of simplicity. The meal felt less like dinner and more like a ceremony.

Not every great meal required a reservation months in advance. One afternoon in Akihabara, between shopping stops, we squeezed into a tiny ramen shop and had one of those bowls you’ll think about long after you’ve left Japan.

In Kyoto, I discovered a wine bar specializing in Japanese wines and cheeses, including an unforgettable camembert, and left with ALL the cute candies and every unique Kit Kat flavor I could find.

Tokyo, you were so much more than I expected.

From Omotesandō’s impossibly stylish streets to the organized chaos of Shibuya Crossing, every corner felt thoughtfully designed. The architecture, both centuries old and strikingly modern, is stunning. The way green space is woven into the city, from sacred forests and bamboo-lined paths to living walls and rooftop gardens, feels less like landscaping and more like a philosophy.

The cleanliness, efficiency, and attention to detail are honestly on another level. And somehow, in one day, you can go from a peaceful shrine surrounded by towering trees to some of the most innovative architecture in the world.
