Some of the texture in this 14x14in painting on wood panel comes from dried corn husks that were wrapped around a !
I was inspired by beautifully textured walls I had seen in a Kyoto ceramic art gallery . It looked like the walls were made with mud and rice straw and reminded me of the walls I had seen many times in some Tucson homes. I am always mesmerized by texture and in that moment, it occurred to me that I could try something similar in a painting, but with a more local material. Hence, my use of dried corn husks!
This piece ended up turning into a highly abstracted landscape — at least, that’s what I see, but let me know what you see. I also used venetian plaster, wire mesh, acrylic paint and ink.
You can see it in Dallas from May 7-10 and during the Downtown Tucson Art Walk at Axle Studios on May 2. INFO in bio and links.
And yes, I love tamales!

I thought the painting-in-process I’ve been posting images of was coming together, but I was wrong.
One idea about creating art is that it is, fundamentally, a way to organize visual information. For my creative process, this is almost always about getting out of the way, so that the “information” can organize itself.
Sometimes that means leaving a piece alone when it’s not working and coming back to it an hour, a day, months or even years later. Once I start working on that painting again, sometimes I have an idea about the next step.
Inevitably, within a few minutes of working towards that half-formed image in my mind, playing with the materials in the moment completely changes where I end up taking the painting. That process of following the unknown always yields more interesting results than when I try to force the original vision that was in my mind.

This painting is finally coming together, I think—time will tell… still have more layers to add and play with. made with venetian plaster, acrylic paint, metallic leaf on a 24 x 36 x 2.5inch wood panel.
The previous several and next few posts are from the same painting-in-process.
You can see the texture up close at The Other Art Fair in Dallas May 7-10, 2026.
