Great image to describe trauma responses.
Credit: PTSD Recovery Series
One of the hardest parts of PTSD and CPTSD can be realizing:
"I know I'm safe now. So why am I still reacting like I'm not?"
Because knowing you're safe logically doesn't automatically change a response your brain learned through experience.
Trauma can teach your brain to recognize certain situations, emotions, behaviors, or relationships as potential threats. And our trauma responses are instinct and automatic protection meant to keep us safe.
The past may be over.
But your brain and nervous system may still be responding to what they learned back then.
That's why telling yourself "I'm safe now" doesn't always make the fear disappear.
You're not choosing to be difficult.
You're not failing at healing.
And you're not broken because a response that helped you survive hasn't disappeared just because your circumstances changed.
The first step in PTSD recovery is understanding our symptoms and giving ourselves grace.
Instead of immediately asking:
"What's wrong with me?"
Try asking:
"What is this response trying to protect me from?"
Understanding the why gives you a good place to start on your healing journey.

💙 Each month, more than 800 Texas kids enter foster care due to abuse or neglect. Most are school-aged. Many have brothers and sisters they need to stay with. They all need safe, loving families.
Here's the hard truth: when families aren't available, siblings get separated. Kids end up sleeping in offices or hotels. Young adults age out of the system without anyone in their corner.
At PCHAS, we're looking for families to open their hearts and homes to sibling groups, school-aged kids, and children of color. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be willing.

Happy Monday, everyone! 💙 We hope you had a restful and enjoyable weekend.
This week, Lumen Support Services is hosting two free workshops focused on recognizing the signs of unhealthy relationships and building awareness of what healthy relationships look like.
Today, we’re sharing a helpful list of signs that it may be time to walk away from an unhealthy relationship. Perhaps you’ll see yourself in these signs, or maybe they’ll remind you of someone you care about.
Whether you’re seeking support for yourself or looking for ways to help a loved one, please know that you are not alone. Recognizing unhealthy patterns is often the first step toward healing, safety, and healthier connections.
We hope this resource is informative and encouraging. We’d love to have you join us for one of this week’s workshops as we continue these important conversations. 💙
