Today, Southern Sector Rising members, along with a representative from Gina Hinojosa’s campaign, were on the ground in Sandbranch following last night’s devastating fire.

We distributed Disaster Survival Backpacks to residents living near the fire as well as other families throughout the community. The backpacks included essential items such as hygiene products for women and men, hand sanitizer, socks, gloves, masks, deodorant, toothpaste, first-aid kits, blankets, Gatorade, water, and other emergency supplies. Also provided dog, cat food and water for the pets.

Most importantly, we spent time talking directly with residents who live near the site of the fire, listening to their experiences and identifying the specific items and assistance they need. We will continue following up based on the needs shared with us.

Please continue to keep the Sandbranch community lifted in prayer. There are simply too many fires happening too often, and the continued lack of running water and adequate infrastructure makes these emergencies even more concerning.

Southern Sector Rising will continue standing with Sandbranch residents—not only during emergencies, but in the ongoing fight for the permanent water, sewer, sanitation, and infrastructure this community deserves.

Selected from over hundreds of candidates and placed at Southern Sector Rising to represent the DHC inaugural class, Onyi and Shreya have made tremendous strides for Southern Sector Rising, including, the creation of a monthly newsletter, revamping our website, and supporting our efforts in Sandbranch, TX.

The Dallas Housing Coalition is excited to partner with Southern Sector Rising through the Internship Matching Program (IMP), which connects talented students and emerging professionals with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in housing, community development, research, communications, and community engagement.

We are thrilled to welcome Shreya Bandi and Onyinyechi Obiakonwa as Southern Sector Rising’s Summer 2026 Interns!

Meet Shreya Bandi
Shreya is pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the University of Houston and recently earned her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her experience includes transportation safety research, GIS mapping, community-focused design projects, social media coordination, and student mentorship. She brings a passion for community-centered planning, creative problem-solving, and public engagement.

Meet Onyinyechi Obiakonwa
Onyinyechi is an Electrical Engineering student at the University of Texas at Arlington with minors in Mathematics and Physics. A Presidential Scholar and Vice President of the Society of Women Engineers, she has experience in tutoring, research, project development, and volunteer service. Her analytical mindset, leadership skills, and commitment to community impact make her a valuable addition to our team.

Throughout the summer, Shreya and Onyinyechi will support Southern Sector Rising’s work to advance equitable housing, strengthen community engagement, and help create opportunities for residents across Southern Dallas.
