ICON13 — The Illustration Conference.

I’ve read so many wonderful reflections on ICON13 in Baltimore, and most have already said what I would only be repeating.

What I can add is this: for me, ICON is a steady drumbeat—a pulse that runs through the two years between conferences and keeps me connected to the illustration community. My fellow board members and Co-Directors remind me that I’m a creative soul, and that I’m not alone.

As much as I love the conference itself, I think I love the two years leading up to it even more. The meetings, the small victories, the inside jokes, the laughter. It’s like training for a marathon, a long hike, or a performance. Together, we make incremental progress, holding hands across time and distance as we march toward a joyful creative explosion.

This is all Esther Pearl Watson (she/her) Esther Pearl Watson’s fault. She invited me to speak at ICON9 in Austin, and I can’t imagine the last ten years without ICON in my life. Thank you, Esther, for opening that door.

To Mark and Steven J Compton —I adore you both.

The first Intro to Letterpress: Thank You Cards class was awesome! We talked letterpress history, set up the presses, mixed lots of fun colors, printed, scored and trimmed.

Judy, Lara and Mary have loads of cards and envelopes for all their letter writing needs.
