Which sadly isn’t recognized as a public holiday, but is extremely important for everyone because you need to file your taxes by then -

But let’s say you don’t file your taxes by Monday, then what happens?

Well, that depends on if you owe taxes or are expecting a refund -

If you owe taxes…​
​

The IRS will impose a failure-to-file penalty, which is typically 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late.
​

This penalty starts accruing the day after the tax filing due date and can be up to 25% of your unpaid taxes.
​

It can also lead to more attention from the IRS (which no one wants), including notices, additional penalties, or even an audit.

If you are expecting a refund…​

There are no penalties for filing late.

However, you're essentially giving the government an interest-free loan until you file.
