Mwonzora Warns Cab3 Threatens Voting Rights And Economic Stability, Calls For Withdrawal

MDC President Douglas Mwonzora, lawyer and former Co-Chairperson of COPAC that drafted the 2013 Constitution, has warned that Constitutional Amendment Bill No.3 undermines democratic rights and opens space for state capture.

Speaking today, Mwonzora said the Bill shifts presidential election from universal suffrage to a “qualified franchise” where only 350 MPs would elect the President. “Out of 17 million Zimbabweans, only 350 people are going to vote for the president,” he stated.

He argued this concentrates power and increases vulnerability to money politics. “Economic criminals would be able to buy each and every one of our MPs. 350 MPs is not a big number and they are able to give each MP 1 million dollars US dollars in order to secure the presidency,” Mwonzora said.

As COPAC Co-Chair, Mwonzora helped draft the 2013 Constitution now under attack. He noted the Constitution requires a referendum when a Bill affects the Bill of Rights. The MDC has put the Minister of Justice on notice to remove clauses that trigger a referendum or face litigation.

The National Assembly voted Thursday on Cab3. Mwonzora said 187 votes were required for a two-thirds majority. Zanu PF had 181 MPs present, and 35 opposition MPs voted yes, pushing the Bill through. He called the vote a failure of leadership.

Mwonzora said the fight now moves to the Senate, where Zanu PF lacks the two-thirds majority. “Without the vote of the opposition, Cab3 will not succeed in the Senate,” he said, urging senators to prioritize national interest over personal gain.

He also announced legal action. “We are going to litigate. The Constitution says that if it affects the Bill of Rights then we must go to referendum,” he stated, criticizing the Constitutional Court for avoiding substantive national questions.

Beyond Parliament, Mwonzora said the MDC will approach SADC, the African Union and the United Nations, citing Zambia’s precedent when leaders blocked presidential term extension. He framed the battle as one for merit over money in leadership selection.

Mwonzora Appeals To South Africa Over Xenophobia, Links Migration To Economic Misrule

On World Refugee Day today, MDC President Douglas Mwonzora appealed to South Africans and the Zimbabwean government to address xenophobic attacks against Zimbabweans and other African nationals.

“Today is World Refugee Day. We take this time to remember our compatriots who are outside this country either as political refugees or economic refugees,” Mwonzora said.

He traced current migration to events 26 years ago when political violence and economic mismanagement forced many Zimbabweans to leave. “About 26 years ago, most of our people left this country as a result of political violence, displacement, political suppression and economic meltdown,” he stated.

Mwonzora appealed directly to South Africans: “We are one people, we are Africans. We come to South Africa because our country is not well. We come to offer our skills and look for opportunities.” He warned South Africans that xenophobia could eventually affect them if economic conditions worsen.

He criticized both governments for inaction. “The South African government is doing nothing meaningful about xenophobia. The Zimbabwean government is bringing up absolutely nothing to ameliorate the situation of our compatriots,” he said.

The MDC leader called for proactive protection of Zimbabwean nationals in South Africa. He linked the refugee crisis to broader governance failures including corruption, unequal access to resources, health and education.

Mwonzora said Zimbabwe’s international isolation and economic exclusion of the masses drive migration. “Our economy is excluding the masses. We do not have equal access to health, to education,” he noted.

He concluded with a call for unity across political lines to fight Cab3 and broader governance challenges. “It does not matter that you are CCC. It does not matter that you are MDC. What matters right now is that you are a Zimbabwean,” he said.

Obama Presidential Centre Unveiled

The 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama has Unveiled the Barack Obama Presidential Library or Centre.The Obama Presidential Center was officially dedicated yesterday on Chicago’s South Side, more than a decade after the project was first announced.

This happened in his hometown of Chicago were high profile dignitaries attended the special event.

Former American Presidents and their First Ladies graced the occasion including 42nd President Bill and Hillary Clinton, 43rd President George Walker Bush JR and Laura Bush, as well as 46th President Joe and Dr. Jill Biden.The former Presidents attended alongside thousands of guests, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Tyler Perry, Quinta Brunson, Stephen Colbert and other entertainers were also among those in attendance.

The Obama children who lived at the White House aged 7 and 10 Sasha and Malia now aged 25 and 27 going 28 were also in attendance. Obama was elected the first black American President in Nov 2008 taking office two terms from 20 Jan 2009 to 20 Jan 2017.

The privately funded, $850 million center includes a museum dedicated to Barack and Michelle Obama’s lives and public service, a Chicago Public Library branch, public artwork and community spaces across its 19-acre Jackson Park campus. Unlike traditional presidential libraries, Obama’s official presidential records will remain primarily digital and under the control of the National Archives. The center opened to the public today June 19.
