As an athlete, I learned how to push through just about anything. You stay focused, do your job, and worry about the hard stuff later. I was really good at that. But a big lesson I learned after Athens was that ālaterā always comes. The things we donāt deal with have a way of resurfacing, and real strength is learning how to face them.
That experience is the reason I said yes! when Nichole Francis Reynolds asked me to co-author an editorial with her about mental health in youth gymnastics. Nichole is the Founder and CEO of https://www.facebook.com/share/1Bv7SP3cDU/?mibextid=wwXIfr , an attorney, and a gymnastics mom and she's building something I genuinely believe the sport has needed for a long time.
Our piece is called āMore Than a Medal: Mental Health, Resilience, and What Youth Gymnasts Truly Need.ā It's honest. It's personal. And I hope it reaches every gymnast and gymnastics family who needs to hear that the mental side of this sport is not a weakness to manage, it's a skill to develop.
