Act
Act exists to make neighborhood safety a normal reality for everyone. Our vision is to make neighborhood safety a normal reality for everyone.
THE NEED: Across Dallas, families who live in high-crime areas feel unsafe, like prisoners in their own homes, because of crime and violence occurring at nearby properties in their neighborhoods. They sleep away from windows to avoid stray bullets and their children face drugs and violence on their walks to school. Community violence is an adverse childhood experience (ACE) that can cause long-term trauma and chronic health problems and also limit future opportunities. Crime and an absence of safety block the resolution of many of the inequities in our city, such as poverty, segregation, job access, housing, and neighborhood change. OUR MODEL: Act is a justice nonprofit that equips individuals who live in high-crime areas to fight crime on their street using the justice system. We are motivated by Christ's challenge to seek justice—every family has the right to live in a flourishing community. We serve clients who are religious and non-religious and who have diverse cultures and backgrounds. To our knowledge, Act is the only organization nationwide using our justice model to help residents rebuild their communities to become places of peace and safety. Act’s resident equipping and legal advocacy model connects neighbors with one another and provides education, tools, and volunteer lawyers from our partner law firms so that residents can hold the owners of drug houses and other high-crime properties accountable for the criminal activity. Strong collaboration is essential both to Act’s model and to the long-term sustainability of a neighborhood, and Act works closely with local neighborhood associations, churches, and nonprofits, as well as city stakeholders, including the Dallas Police Department, City Attorney’s Office, and Code Compliance. OUR IMPACT: Since 2009, Act has partnered with over 300 residents to resolve more than 200 crime properties across West Dallas, South Dallas, and South Oak Cliff, and Pleasant Grove. Our legacy West Dallas neighborhoods (where we have completed active casework) experienced up to a 50% reduction in crime. Neighborhood revitalization is more sustainable with Act’s model because the agents of change are the communities themselves standing up for justice and systemic change. In West Dallas, engaged community leaders have continued their efforts to maintain the peace and flourishing of these neighborhoods and have advocated for our work in other parts of the city. They demonstrate that equipping residents to be neighborhood guardians together is vital to sustaining long-term results. Communities have a vision of what is possible with a safer, more peaceful neighborhood, and we equip them to bring this vision to life. As one client shares, “I do what I do so that my children can see if you stand up for something, things can change.”

Neighborhood Challenge:
Introduce yourself to one neighbor you have never met! 👋🏽
You don’t need a long conversation. A simple “Hi, I’m your neighbor” can open the door to trust and future connection. These small interactions weave together a stronger community that makes and keeps neighborhoods safe.

Today we honor Juneteenth — a day remembering freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
Juneteenth is celebrated to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the date in 1865 when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
At Act, we believe every person deserves dignity, safety, and the opportunity to flourish in their community.
We are grateful for neighbors, leaders, and advocates who continue working toward a more just and hopeful future for our cities.
"For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." – Galatians 5:13

Neighborhood Challenge:
Offer practical help to someone nearby this week!
Watch a neighbor’s pet. Water plants while they travel. Help carry groceries. Check in on an elderly neighbor.
Simple acts build strong communities.

Pray for neighbors – many who may be experiencing isolation.
Ask God to build connection, friendship, and trust in your neighborhood.
Sometimes the greatest change begins with someone simply being seen. Ask God to open your eyes to those near you who need to be seen.

This week's Neighboring Challenge: LET'S CONNECT
Create a simple neighborhood contact list.
Start with just a few neighbors and exchange phone numbers for emergencies, pet sitting, package pickups, or helping during storms.
Community grows stronger when neighbors know and trust one another. It doesn't have to be as hard as we can make it out to be. It can all start with a simple knock on the door, a smile, and a simple introduction.
We had an ✨amazing✨ night at Safest Stockyards at helping make Fort Worth stronger and safer! To learn more about how you can be a part of the fun in making neighborhoods safety a normal reality for everyone, visit actforjustice.org or see the link in bio!

Act’s work moves through five stages:
• Listening
• Investigating
• Advocating
• Resolving
• Thriving
We start by showing up. Act conducts community visits with residents and government officials.
From there, we move into the investigation phase. Our team gathers facts and builds each case with care.
When the clients and pro bono attorneys are ready, we move forward with legal action.
Our legal action leads to holding the owner accountable and ending unsafe conditions.
The result is safety and justice for the community. Clients are protected, and neighborhoods become safer, healthier, and more vibrant places to live.
We believe lasting change happens when communities are empowered long after a case is resolved.
Justice is not only about removing harm — it’s about helping neighborhoods thrive. Learn more by visiting www.actforjustice.org
