Still smiling from last week's UTA MSMR Insights Conference.

Thank you, Michaela Mora and the UTA MSMR staff, for bringing our industry into one room. And thank you to Mike Nash, Jami Pulley, Kelly Heatly, Cat Maxwell Smith and all the others, including the UTA MSMR students, who worked to pull off a wonderful conference.

I'm grateful to serve on the MSMR Advisory Council, and even more grateful for the connections that keep turning into friendships. Kelly Kitchens, Ramiro Davila, Diana Ramos, Katie Guerrero, Cynthia Tello: what a joy to be in the room with you.

I’ve watched the role of leadership change as people ask more of work than a paycheck. Meaning matters.

That asks something of leaders, too. Understanding what motivates a team begins with being clear about what matters to you and why you’re asking people to build alongside you.

When leaders understand their own purpose, they’re better prepared to create room for others to contribute with purpose, too.

Empathy makes change something we build with people.

I’ve seen change management work differently when leaders account for the humans experiencing it, including the emotions that come with uncertainty and adjustment. Listening along the way gives leaders a chance to learn and respond.

When people have a voice in change, they can begin to see themselves as part of it rather than something it’s happening to.

What makes someone feel safe enough to tell us the truth?

I’ve found that trust often begins with the willingness to say, “I don’t know the answer, but I want to understand.”

There’s vulnerability in admitting what we don’t know and inviting someone else’s truth into the room. For leaders and teams, that honesty creates space to learn with people rather than assuming we already know what they need.

Sometimes speaking our own truth is what makes room to hear theirs.

What happens when we listen for the emotion beneath a decision? I’ve observed how often meaningful change begins in the space between what people say they want and what they want to feel.

Logic matters, but emotion helps us understand what’s underneath a decision. When leaders can listen for that emotion without trying to control it, they gain a clearer understanding of what can help people move forward.

That’s where empathy becomes a pathway to change.

I’ve learned that empathy doesn’t require agreement. It requires enough understanding to let two different perspectives exist in the same room.

That’s what AIR is designed to help leaders practice:
- Anchor in your why.
- Inquire to understand.
- Reframe what you heard.

When we stop trying to win agreement and start working toward understanding, we create room for better conversations and stronger leadership.

I’ve learned there’s an important difference between empathy and absorbing someone else’s emotional state as your own.

Empathy allows us to understand what another person is experiencing while staying grounded in ourselves. When we lose that distinction, we’re moving into emotional contagion.

For leaders and teams, knowing the difference matters. Connection doesn’t require carrying someone else’s emotions.

Over the years, I've learned that the hardest person to understand is often ourselves. We spend so much time listening to customers, leading teams, and solving problems that we forget to notice what's shaping our own decisions.

The empathy we offer others grows stronger when it's rooted in self-awareness. That's where wiser leadership begins.

One distinction I’ve learned to value in leadership is the difference between sympathy and empathy.

Empathy isn’t about reaching for our own experience or rushing in with an answer. It’s about emotionally resonating with what someone is experiencing and allowing it to be understood, not trying to correct it.

Why do people care about the work they do?

I’ve learned that giving people what they need to do the work isn’t the same as understanding why the work matters to them.

People bring their own desires and meaning to work. For leaders, the deeper work is listening well enough to understand what those are and creating space for them within the work that needs to be done.

That kind of understanding changes how we lead.
