A Roman-era shipwreck has been identified off Sicily, and hundreds of ancient amphorae are still scattered across the seabed.

The wreck lies around 46 metres (151 feet) deep, approximately three miles off Mazara del Vallo, and has been provisionally dated to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.

Italian authorities are now documenting and investigating the site, which could provide a remarkable insight into Mediterranean trade more than 2,000 years ago.
This is the kind of underwater archaeology that reminds us just how much history is still waiting beneath the surface.
