5 Questions to Ask Before Adding a Teen Driver
Adding a teen driver is a big milestone, but it can also bring major changes to your auto insurance. Before they get behind the wheel, ask:
✅ When does my insurance company need to be notified?
Some carriers have different requirements for permitted and newly licensed drivers.
✅ How will adding my teen affect our premium?
The cost can vary based on the teen’s age, driving experience, household vehicles and insurance carrier.
✅ Are there discounts available?
Ask about good student, driver training, distant student and safe-driving program discounts.
✅ Could the vehicles on our policy affect the cost?
Household drivers are generally insured to drive the vehicles listed on the policy, but the types of vehicles in the household can still significantly affect the overall premium.
✅ Should we review our liability limits?
A new driver can mean additional risk. This is a good time to review your liability coverage and consider whether an umbrella policy makes sense.
Do not wait until after your teen starts driving to update your policy. A quick insurance review can help protect your family, avoid coverage concerns and identify available savings.
📞 Contact Cambridge Insurance Agency before your teen hits the road. We’ll help you understand your options and make sure your coverage is ready for this exciting new chapter.

Before You File a Claim
Photos and documentation can make a meaningful difference.
When a loss happens, it is natural to want to start cleaning up or making repairs right away. However, before anything is repaired, replaced, or discarded, it is important to document the damage as clearly as possible.
Helpful documentation may include:
• photos of the damage
• photos of the surrounding area
• dates and times
• repair estimates
• invoices or receipts
• notes about what happened
Good documentation can help provide a clearer picture of the loss and may help the claim process move more smoothly if a claim is filed.
When it is safe to do so, take photos first, keep records, and contact your agent before moving forward with repairs.

Before You File a Claim
It is important to understand the difference between covered damage and maintenance-related issues before opening a claim.
Insurance is designed to respond to sudden and accidental losses. It is generally not intended to cover normal wear and tear, long-term leaks, deterioration, or issues that develop over time.
For example, water damage from a sudden pipe burst may be handled very differently than damage caused by a slow leak that has been occurring over an extended period.
In many cases, the cause of the damage matters just as much as the damage itself.
Before filing a claim, it is helpful to take a closer look at whether the issue appears to be sudden and accidental or more consistent with maintenance. A quick conversation with your agent can help you better understand the situation and determine the most appropriate next step.

Before You File a Claim
It is important to understand your deductible before opening a claim.
Your deductible is the portion of a covered loss you are responsible for before insurance begins to pay.
For example, if your deductible is $2,500 and the repair estimate is $2,800, there may be very little benefit to filing the claim once the deductible is applied.
This is why we encourage clients to know their deductible in actual dollars, not just as a percentage or policy term.
Before filing a claim, take a moment to review your deductible and talk with your agent. A quick conversation can help you understand how the claim may be handled and whether filing is the best next step.

Before You File a Claim
When possible, get an estimate first.
If the damage is minor, an estimate can help you understand the approximate cost of repairs before deciding whether a claim makes sense.
This is especially important when the repair amount may be close to or below your deductible.
Having an estimate does not mean you cannot file a claim. It simply gives you more information so you can make a better decision.
Before opening a claim, take a moment to understand the potential repair cost, your deductible, and whether filing is the best next step.

Before You File a Claim
Not every loss should automatically turn into a filed insurance claim.
If the damage is minor, close to your deductible, or may involve maintenance rather than a covered loss, it is often wise to speak with your agent first.
A quick conversation can help you better understand:
• whether the situation may be covered
• how your deductible applies
• whether filing a claim makes sense
• what steps to take next
This can help clients make informed decisions and may also help reduce unnecessary claims activity.
If you experience a loss, call your agent before filing a claim whenever possible.

Real Claim Scenario, No Names
A client had water damage from an AC drain line.
At first, the question seemed simple: “Is water damage covered?”
But with insurance, the better question is usually: What caused the damage, and how long had it been happening?
There can be a big difference between water damage that is sudden and accidental versus damage caused by long-term seepage, wear and tear, or lack of maintenance.
That difference can affect how a claim is reviewed and whether coverage applies.
The lesson?
Not all water damage is treated the same, and policy details matter.
This is why we encourage our clients to understand their coverage before something happens, not after.

Many homeowners assume that if part of their roof or siding is damaged, the insurance company will automatically replace everything so it all matches.
That is not always the case.
After a covered loss, some policies may only pay to repair or replace the damaged portion. If the original materials are discontinued, faded, weathered, or no longer an exact match, the undamaged portion of the home may not be included unless the policy provides matching coverage or specific endorsement language.
A few things to review on your policy:
✅ Does your policy include any matching coverage?
✅ Are there endorsements that help with uniform appearance?
✅ Would only the damaged portion be replaced after a claim?
✅ Do you understand how your carrier handles discontinued materials?
✅ Have you reviewed your roof and siding coverage recently?
The best time to understand this part of your policy is before a claim happens, not after repairs begin.
At Cambridge Insurance Agency, we help our clients look beyond the premium and understand how their policy may respond when real-life damage occurs.
If you would like us to review your current home coverage, we are happy to help.
