Oak Cliff came out tonight for a beautiful family gathering in the wake of yesterday’s tragic apartment explosion.

So good to see so many church members, faith and community leaders, and such an honor to pray/speak tonight.

Let’s keep showing up for each other.

We are continuing to monitor developments concerning the horrific fire and gas explosion in Oak Cliff yesterday.

I communicated with both Councilmember Chad West, and Commissioner Dr Elba Garcia yesterday and it is clear that Mission Oak Cliff in cooperation with the Red Cross is taking the key first response position for this crisis. Our understanding is the immediate short term needs of those who are displaced are being taken care of. But there will no doubt be longer-term needs too.

Oak Cliff deeply interconnected and all of us at Kessler Park United Methodist Church in the prayer for those affected.

Specifically, as many friends have already noted, one of the unaccounted for is our dear friend, Sylvia Collins. Dennise has known Sylvia as an inspiration and mentor for many decades.

I have also known her from many organizing efforts over the years. One of the things that has always inspired me about here is her passion for brining together activists across generational lines.

I am recalling how she was a faithful part of the planning for last year’s Mega March, attending several meetings held at KPUMC for that event.

Even as I share these thoughts about one friend affected, please continue to be in prayer for all those affected.

I saw S.G. Goodman a month ago in Dallas with Jesse Welles. She and band were just as fantastic.
