Y’all we’re celebrating 30 years of and taking the show on the road all fall long! Come see us in KANSAS, CALIFORNIA, ARIZONA, NEVADA, and FLORIDA! We’re bringing you a combination of high energy, full band shows, stripped down intimate acoustic performances with the stories behind the songs, and we’ll be stopping in at Pride On the Page and the Miami Book Fair for book signings and discussions about my memoir . Today, I lost my dear friend and sponsor, David.

As personal as this feels, I know he was a hero to many fragile souls who are now strong and healthy because of him.

He taught me almost everything I know about wellness, recovery, and sobriety. But perhaps the greatest gift he gave me was teaching me how to walk this road my way—with honesty, courage, faith, and the willingness to keep showing up.

David had a superpower. He could meet people in the darkest moment of their lives, look beyond their pain, and see the person they could still become. He loved people when they needed it most. He stood beside them until they were strong enough to stand again. I know that because he did it for me.

When he spoke at Alex’s and my wedding, he said something I will carry in my heart forever:

“I met you on the worst day of your life, and today I get to stand with you on the best day of your life.”

The truth is, so many of my best days were possible because of David. The foundation I stand on today is one he helped build. His wisdom is in my recovery. His love is in my marriage. His voice is in my spirit. His fingerprints are all over the life I am blessed to live.

The final days of a person’s life can never erase the lifetime of love, service, and healing they gave to this world. How David left this earth is deeply personal and painful, and that story belongs to him and his family. But his legacy belongs to every person he helped save, every hand he held, and every soul he reminded was still worthy of another chance.

Losing one of our soldiers in this fight cuts deeper than words can reach. But I will not allow grief or fear to have the final word. David carried the torch for me when I could not carry it for myself. Now it is my sacred responsibility to carry that light forward—to love the next person, reach into the next dark place, and freely give away what he so freely gave to me.

David, you earned your wings. You are now a fire in my soul that will never go out. I will honor you by staying in the fight, telling the truth, helping others, and never wasting the words you gave me.

Rest well, my friend, my brother, and my sponsor.

I will carry the torch from here.

It shouldn’t take a tragedy like 9/11 for our country to come together as one. As we honor the victims and families on this somber day, I pray we can once again find the love, compassion, and resolve that we all felt in those days following this horrible moment in our history. God bless America. 🇺🇸
