Trump mispronounced “Choctaw” at a rally in Durant, Oklahoma… Trump spoke at the Choctaw Event Center, so obviously, this is personal.
Chief Batton, Chief of the Choctaw Nation, shared that the use of the Choctaw Event Center is not an endorsement. That might seem like nothing, but it is important.
Tribes need a working relationship with the White House, regardless of which party controls it. It is even more important with a leader who asks for forgiveness rather than permission. This puts tribal nations in a difficult position, and they have to be intentional to pick and choose their fights with Trump. A rally is probably not worth it.
Additionally, my tribe has resisted Trump in its own way. When ICE proposed a facility in Durant, Oklahoma, my tribe ended up buying the property they were considering. Resistance takes on many forms.

Governor Kevin Stitt has been vocally against the McGirt v. Oklahoma decision which upheld the Oklahoma tribes’ treaty rights. It is clear that he is seeking to divide Oklahoma and pit racial groups against one another rather than accept his loss and move forward.

I was two-stepping at a bar when I shared with someone that I was Native American. After sharing my identity, they literally tried to get me to say I hate America.
Let’s go make history together!! When she wins, Mary Peltola will be the first Alaska Native in the US Senate!
So proud to have Deb Haaland and Peggy Flanagan to look up to!
Let’s elect these powerhouse Native women to office!
