Happy first day of fall! 🍂 Cooler mornings, pumpkins on the front steps, and fireside evenings — fall is one of our favorite seasons for spending time in the garden. What are you most looking forward to this season?

Southern Botanical was featured in an article by the National Association of Landscape Professionals on manager retention in a competitive labor market, with insights from our very own Mackenzie Payne.

One thing we've learned: retention rarely comes down to pay alone. It's built through clear expectations, real career paths, and managers who feel genuinely invested in.

A few practices that have made a difference for us:

• Benchmarking salary and benefits on a regular cadence, not just at review time
• Putting career development plans in place so people can see what's next
• Building Intention Plans for Success that outline how each role should spend its time, reducing the need to micromanage
• Talking openly with our teams when recruiters are active, rather than letting it go unaddressed
• Celebrating both professional milestones and personal ones, since both signal that people matter here

These practices helped us retain 100% of our account managers in 2025.

Ever have a bare spot in your lawn that just won't fill in?

Sometimes, the problem isn't the grass itself.

At this North Texas property, tree roots had grown into the irrigation lines, causing leaks that kept the soil too wet and contributed to fungal pressure. Instead of replacing the sod, our team fixed the irrigation issue, improved the soil, and helped the existing turf recover.

Now, the lawn has filled back in on its own.

A good reminder that healthy turf starts with healthy conditions below the surface.

Summer was great, but we're ready for fall temperatures right around now...

This finished courtyard looks simple. Getting it there was anything but.

At Liberty Mutual's 8th-floor courtyard in Plano, the original cement pots weighed hundreds of pounds and had developed cracks over the years. They were also too large to remove whole.

Our enhancements team demolished them in place using specialized tools, working carefully around the floor-to-ceiling glass surrounding the courtyard. The old cement pots were replaced with lightweight poly-clay pots that are easier to move and give the space a cleaner, more polished look.

The planting beds needed attention too. Oversized agaves had grown large enough to sink into the beds, so the team rebuilt them using a three-tiered structure of foam, gravel, and custom rooftop soil to prevent future settling and improve drainage.

The result: a courtyard that's easier to maintain and built to hold up over time.

Our Residential Account Managers spent the morning in hands-on training on garden management and client care across our Dallas properties, learning to catch small issues (stress on a plant, an early irrigation hiccup) before they turn into a bigger problem.

It's a quieter part of estate garden care, but it's a big part of why the properties Southern Botanical manages stay consistent season to season.
