Open Church Our faith empowers us to open whatever is closed.
First Community Church is a congregation formed by many theological traditions. The same is true of the United Church of Christ. FCC and the UCC are bodies where intellectual freedom and the great liberating principles of the Church are cherished. There is no one creed that defines us, but there are affirmations of faith that hold us together in our respective journeys. Here are but a few:

🌊 What if doubt isn't the opposite of faith—but part of learning to trust?
Peter steps out of the boat. For a moment, he walks on water. Then fear takes over, and he begins to sink.
Maybe that's not just Peter's story. Maybe it's ours.
Have you ever doubted yourself? Wondered if you were enough? Felt like an impostor, certain everyone else had more faith, more confidence, or more courage than you?
This Sunday, we'll wrestle with Matthew 14 and discover that faith isn't about never doubting. It's about hearing Christ call us into the unknown, taking the next step, and trusting that when we begin to sink, we won't be abandoned.
We'll begin worship with a simple life jacket and ask:
🦺 What keeps us afloat when the storms of life threaten to pull us under?
🤝 Who has helped you believe in yourself when you couldn't?
💙 How does Christ hold us up through grace, love, and community?
Wherever you are on your journey—full of faith, full of questions, or somewhere in between—you belong here.

🌊 What keeps you afloat when life gets stormy?
Most of us won't ever walk on water. But many of us know what it feels like to be overwhelmed by doubt, fear, grief, or the quiet voice that says, "You're not enough."
This Sunday, we'll explore Matthew 14—the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water—not to ask whether the miracle happened, but to ask what the story might teach us about faith, courage, and the moments when we begin to sink.
We'll begin with something as ordinary as a life jacket and wonder:
🦺 What keeps us buoyant?
🤝 Who has believed in us when we couldn't believe in ourselves?
💙 How does Christ reach out to us through love, grace, and community?
Whether your faith feels strong, uncertain, or somewhere in between, you are welcome here. Bring your questions, your doubts, and your whole self.

CLBSJ is excited to partner with New Church Dallas and Rev. Dr. Jeremy Williams for an online mini-course on abolitionist themes in the Book of Acts. The course will take place on Wednesdays in August (8/5, 8/12, 8/19 and 8/26) at 6:30 Central Time / 7:30 Eastern Time. In each session we will dive into a portion of the book of Acts that addresses the themes of imprisonment, truthtelling and release, and consider what these stories have to say to our movements for abolition democracy today. This course is part of CLBSJ’s Black August series.

📖 What if faith isn't about having all the answers?
This Sunday we'll explore why the Bible is a big, messy, beautiful collection of stories that invites us to think, question, and grow. We'll also meet Jacob, who wrestled with God through the night—and discovered that sometimes blessings come through the struggle.
At First Community UCC, we believe we take the Bible seriously. We bring our minds, our hearts, our doubts, and our hopes to Scripture, trusting that God meets us in the questions as much as in the answers.
Wherever you are on your faith journey, you're welcome here.
