Open Church Our faith empowers us to open whatever is closed.
First Community Church is a congregation formed by many theological traditions. The same is true of the United Church of Christ. FCC and the UCC are bodies where intellectual freedom and the great liberating principles of the Church are cherished. There is no one creed that defines us, but there are affirmations of faith that hold us together in our respective journeys. Here are but a few:
Our Core Beliefs:
(What is most important to us)
•We believe that the Bible is God's primary revelation, but also believe that more light continues to break into this present age.
•We believe the historic affirmation "No Creed but Christ." Doctrinal freedom is cherished and honored within our congregation.
•We believe in Christian unity and pray the prayer of Jesus, "That they may all be one."
•We believe in one God known as Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit.
•We believe that the Church is made up of people in need of God's grace and that it is the Church's work to share God's grace with others as good news.
•We believe that the mission of the Church is to work for justice that the peace (Shalom) of God may prevail across the Earth.

Wait… Jesus calls Peter “Satan”?
In Job 1, Satan appears in God's heavenly court, challenging God about Job's faithfulness. In Mark 8, Jesus turns to Peter and says, “Get behind me, Satan!”—not because Peter has suddenly become an evil supernatural being, but because Peter is trying to pull Jesus away from the difficult path he has just described.
So what does Satan actually mean in these passages?
And what happens when the people—or even the voices—we love become obstacles to what God is calling us to do?
This Sunday we’re wrestling with Job 1:6–12 and Mark 8:32–33, and with some uncomfortable questions about suffering, opposition, fear, and faithfulness.
Come wrestle with us. We’re still engaged. We’re still fighting.
