September is Su***de Prevention Month. More than 720,000 people die by su***de every year. As believers, we are called to share God’s heart for people. Unfortunately, so many lives have been impacted by su***de. This type of loss is complex to grieve. Confusion, anger, guilt, sorrow and fear often coexist as someone mourns a loved one lost to su***de.

Su***de is complex and can be connected to a profound loss of hope, mental illness, trauma and other overwhelming circumstances. Sometimes depression is clinical, and sometimes it is triggered or intensified by the suffering we endure on Earth.

As Christians, we know where hope comes from. How can we help meet the needs of those experiencing suicidal thoughts and provide them with support, hope and presence as they fight?

Congratulations to David and Carolyn from Beaumont, TX on their kinship grandparent adoption. The two finalized the adoption of two of their grandchildren earlier this month.

Kinship care is the care of children by relatives, or in some locations, close family friends are referred to as “fictive kin.” Children who remain with family, in foster care or adoption situations, tend to have a greater sense of belonging and acceptance, which in turn promotes stability. Twenty-five years have passed since that September morning when the world changed forever.

Today we remember and honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger, the families who still carry grief, and the communities forever marked by absence. As we mark this anniversary, may we recommit ourselves to being instruments of Christ’s peace in the world still aching for it.
