EMOTIONAL NEGLECT IN MARRIAGE

A couple can share the same bed every night, raise children, pay bills, and still live like two strangers renting space in the same house. They talk about school fees, food, and electricity, but rarely ask, “How are you really doing?” One partner comes home exhausted and receives nothing beyond a casual glance. The other is struggling emotionally but has stopped explaining because every conversation feels like a disturbance. At some point, the marriage becomes a well managed household with very little companionship. Even the marriage certificate cannot force two people to feel connected.

Emotional neglect does not always look like cruelty. Sometimes, it looks like indifference. Your wife tells you about her difficult day, and you respond with your usual “You will be fine.” Your husband tries to share something important, and you are busy scrolling through your phone, as though his feelings are competing with a breaking news update. Nobody is fighting, yet somebody is slowly withdrawing. Marriage needs more than financial responsibility and physical presence. Ask questions, listen without rushing to defend yourself, notice when your partner becomes unusually quiet, and create room for affection and honest conversations. You do not have to solve every problem. Sometimes, being fully present is already a form of love.

A person can survive without expensive gifts, fancy dates, or daily romantic speeches, but living for years without feeling heard, appreciated, or wanted can leave a deep wound. Do not wait until your partner finds emotional comfort somewhere else before you realise that loneliness can exist inside a marriage. The person beside you may not be asking for perfection. They may simply want to feel that they still matter to you.

A marriage can have a full house and an empty heart. Never let your partner become a stranger while you are busy being a spouse.

SOME PEOPLE ARE FALLING APART QUIETLY, AND YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW.

They still laugh. They still reply to messages. They still go to work, post pictures and tell everyone, “I’m fine.” Sometimes, the strongest looking person in the room is simply the one who has become very good at hiding what hurts.

We often wait for people to ask for help before we check on them. But some people will never ask. They have learned to carry their pain quietly because they do not want to become a burden.

To everyone quietly fighting a battle nobody knows about, I wish you strength, peace and better days. May whatever you are going through become lighter, and may you find a reason to smile again. You will get through this.

Love deserves patience and effort, but you should never have to destroy your self worth to prove your commitment. Do not let the fear of being alone keep you in a relationship where your heart has forgotten what peace feels like.

STAYING IN A RELATIONSHIP OUT OF FEAR

Some people are not staying because they are happy. They are staying because leaving feels more frightening than suffering. They fear sleeping alone, starting again at their age, or hearing people say, “After everything you went through together, you still left?” So they remain in relationships that have become more painful than peaceful. They smile in public, post anniversary pictures, and tell everyone they are fine. Meanwhile, their hearts are quietly asking for an exit. Sometimes, the relationship is struggling so badly that even the neighbours can sense it, yet the couple is busy convincing the internet that love is still sweet.

Fear can make you treat an unhappy relationship like a familiar prison. You know the door is open, but you keep sitting inside because the outside world looks uncertain. You worry that nobody else will love you, that you have invested too much time, or that people will laugh at your decision. But staying with someone simply because you fear loneliness can cost you your peace, confidence, and sense of self. A relationship deserves patience, honest communication, and the willingness to work through difficulties. However, enduring repeated disrespect, manipulation, or abuse is not a requirement for proving your love. Starting again may be difficult, but losing yourself while trying to keep someone else is a price worth examining.

Do not let the fear of being alone convince you to remain where you are no longer emotionally safe or genuinely valued. You deserve the freedom to make thoughtful decisions about your happiness and future. Sometimes, the most courageous step is accepting that a relationship has ended, even when your heart still remembers its beautiful beginning. Being alone while rebuilding your life is better than being accompanied by someone who makes you feel alone every day.

Providing for others should never mean abandoning yourself. A man deserves love, support, and understanding, even when he has nothing to offer but his tired heart.

MEN WHO ARE TIRED OF BEING STRONG

Sometimes, the man everyone calls strong is simply a tired man who has learned how to hide his exhaustion. He pays bills, solves problems, supports family, and says, “I am fine,” even when his mind is running out of answers. People expect him to be a walking ATM with the emotional stability of a monk. The moment he admits he is struggling, someone reminds him to be a man. But who checks on the man who checks on everyone?

A man can be responsible and still need support. He can love his family and still feel overwhelmed by the weight of providing. Think of a phone that keeps charging other devices while its own battery is at 2%. Eventually, even the phone will switch off. Men deserve friendships where they can speak without being mocked, relationships where they can be vulnerable without losing respect, and families that ask how they are doing before asking what they have brought home. Strength should not become a prison where a man is forbidden to admit that he needs help.

If you know a man who always shows up for others, check on him. Do not wait until he stops answering calls or loses the energy to explain what he is going through. Sometimes, a simple “Brother, how are you really doing?” can open a door that pride has kept locked for years. Even the man carrying everyone deserves someone willing to hold his hand.

Some people love the version of you that never disagrees, never says no, and never challenges them. Find the courage to be yourself, even when being yourself changes how they see you.

THE FEAR OF BEING YOURSELF

Have you ever agreed with an opinion you completely disagreed with simply because you did not want people to see you differently? You laugh at jokes that hurt you, pretend to enjoy things you dislike, and carefully choose your words because you are afraid someone might say, “You have changed.”

Some people have become so good at pleasing others that they deserve an award for playing a character they never auditioned for. The sad part is that while everyone is enjoying the version of you they know, you may be quietly struggling with the person you have been forced to hide.

Sometimes, the fear of being yourself begins with rejection. You shared an idea and someone mocked you. You showed love and got hurt. You expressed your ambition and people made you feel foolish. So you start reducing yourself to fit into rooms where you once felt uncomfortable. You say yes when you mean no, abandon your dreams to satisfy expectations, and mistake silence for peace.

But imagine spending your entire life editing your personality so everyone can approve of you. Who, then, gets to experience the real you? Learn to express yourself with respect, accept correction without losing your identity, and understand that being accepted by everyone is not a realistic condition for living a meaningful life.

Ask yourself this question today: Am I making choices because they reflect who I am, or because I am afraid of disappointing people? You do not have to insult others to be authentic, and you do not have to reveal everything about yourself to prove that you are genuine.

Start with one honest opinion, one decision that reflects your values, or one dream you have been postponing for approval. The world may applaud the version of you that performs well, but your peace begins when you stop abandoning yourself for applause.

Some of us dress up and go to church every Sunday, yet we sit there with malice in our hearts. What is the use of lifting your hands to God if you cannot even forgive the person sitting next to you? True worship starts with a clean heart, not just a clean outfit.

▪️If this message speaks to you, take one bold step, reach out and settle that matter.

Happy Sunday, Famille 🕊️ ❤️

September has a special place in my heart because it gives me another reason to celebrate people who matter to me. Today, that person is Biradzem Benoit Yuven, who turns a year older.

Happy Birthday, Benoit!

Some people come into our lives and, with time, become part of the story we are writing. I am grateful to have you among the people I can celebrate and wish well. As you step into another year, I hope life gives you more moments that make you proud of how far you have come.
