There was something different about owning your music.
You didn't have access to 100 million songs.
You had the 47 albums sitting on that shelf.
And you knew every one of them.
You knew which record had the scratch halfway through Side Two.
You knew exactly where your favorite guitar solo started.
You knew every word on the liner notes because you'd read them while the album played.
And when you spent your hard-earned money on a record, you didn't listen to 20 seconds and skip to something else.
You gave it a chance.
Then you gave it another chance.
Eventually, songs you barely noticed became favorites.
Your record collection wasn't just a way to listen to music. It became a history of your life.
The album you bought with your first paycheck.
The one somebody gave you for your birthday.
The record you played after your first breakup.
The one that somehow survived every apartment, every move, every relationship and every decade afterward.
Streaming gave us almost every song ever recorded.
That's incredible.
But there's something it never quite replaced.
That feeling of looking at a shelf full of records and knowing:
Those aren't available to me.
Those are mine.

Facts
Back then, buying an album wasn't a 3-second decision.
It was a commitment.
You studied the cover. Read the back. Checked the song list. Asked your friends. Looked at your wallet. Changed your mind three times.
Because once you spent that money, you were living with that record for a while.
And somehow that made the music mean more.
Today we have access to 100 million songs.
But there was something special about standing in a record store for an hour trying to decide which ten songs were worth taking home forever.
“A purely analog technology, Vinyl is inferior to digital forms in endless respects; except one, fullness. Digital compression methods intentionally remove artifacts to ensure the cleanest output. Vinyl absorbs artifacts, capturing every sound that actually occurred during a recording. There is no compression algorithm, you can't make it smaller, and it doesn't sound like it came out of a computer…. Vinyl is real, tangible, tactile — it's the entirety of the experience.”
