E. Kim Coontz was instrumental in founding the California Center for Cooperative Development (CCCD) and has served as its Executive Director since its inception.

When the UC Davis Center for Cooperatives closed in 2004, Kim took a leading role in efforts to preserve its cooperative development work. Those efforts ultimately led to the founding of CCCD in 2007.

Over 19 years, she helped grow CCCD from a one-room office with 1.5 FTE and a few student interns into an established nonprofit with more than eight professional staff and growing programs focused on creating ownership opportunities for low-income and underserved communities.

Kim will retire as Executive Director on September 30, 2026. She carries with her the profound gratitude and respect of hundreds of cooperative leaders across the golden state whose work and communities she has touched and improved.

Leila Roberts started her position as CCCD's new Executive Director on September 1st. Keep an eye out for an official announcement as we bring Leila into our network.

Did you know that today is ? Youth-led co-ops are a critical part of the ecosystem. They introduce young people to the radical notion that they can co-own, co-govern, and co-create the resources they need for their lives🔥🔥🔥. They serve as a training ground for future cooperative leaders, instilling the cooperative values and principles during formative years that can last a lifetime. Plus, they often just rock🪨! They provide meaningful jobs, build strong communities, allows student to graduate with less (or no!) debt, and are often on the leading edge of social movements.

So, this is an official THANKS to all the youthful cooperators, current and future changemakers, and the people who'll bring the movement to the next generation.

What's your favorite youth-led co-op? Tag them in the comments!

Proud to be a part of the ROC USA CTAP Network!

Convening 2026 is officially underway! Once a year, our 9 Community Technical Assistance Center (CTAP) affiliates from across the country come together under one roof, under one shared mission: stronger resident-owned communities.

Our CTAP network is the heart of this work, walking hand-in-hand with residents to build, preserve, and sustain resident-owned communities nationwide. A massive thank you to all 9 CTAPs driving the movement forward this week: California Center for Cooperative Development, CASA of Oregon, CoNorth Cooperative Housing Solutions, Cooperative Development Institute, LEAP Housing, NeighborWorks Montana, -NH / Hampshire Community Loan Fund, Northwest and Community Housing.
