While most of his cantatas were written during his 27 years as Kantor in Liepzig, a number date from earlier in Bach's career. Today at noon, we'll hear a work that Bach wrote in Weimar, eventually revising it and performing it in Leipzig 19 years after it was first composed. Aaron Mood presents Bach Cantatas, Sundays at 12:03pm.

Today at 2:00, Theme and Variations continues its ongoing celebration of the 250th anniversary of this country’s independence with American music from the 19th century. The composers are Dudley Buck, Benjamin Carr, Arthur Foote, Anthony Philip Heinrich, Justin Holland, Ethelbert Nevin and Horatio Parker.

Born on August 15, 1922, today we celebrate Lukas Foss, one of the most adventurous and versatile figures in 20th-century American classical music.

Composer, conductor, pianist and educator, Foss constantly explored new musical languages, moving from neoclassicism to improvisation, experimental techniques and electronic music without ever losing his distinctive creative voice.

He passed away in 2009, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of curiosity, innovation and musical freedom.

Astor Piazzolla was an accomplished bandoneon player, a type of concertina popular in Argentinian tango ensembles. Tomorrow at noon, we'll hear a 1983 recording of Piazzolla playing his own "Bandoneon Concerto," with Pedro Ignacio Calderon conducting. Aaron Mood presents Retro Recordings, Saturdays at 12:03pm, with support from America's Packard Museum.
