Wrapping up another Thursday at the shop with yet another 6L80E rebuild—but this one is far from your ordinary stock build!
This unit came out of a heavily modified 2010 Camaro SS pushing 700+ horsepower, so a factory-style rebuild wasn’t going to cut it. We called on some performance upgrades from our good friends at Sonnax to make sure this 6L80E is ready for the power.
This build features high-capacity friction upgrades throughout, a 300M billet intermediate shaft and clutch hub, along with several other upgrades designed to increase strength, holding capacity, and durability.
And to complete the package, we paired it with one of our 245mm billet triple-disc torque converters—giving this Camaro the complete drivetrain setup it needs to put that power to work.

Today we are taking another look inside the testing process here at Turner Racing Transmissions!
In this video, you can see our internal torque converter dump valves functioning during a dyno test. As the dump valve is activated, converter charge pressure drops as the valve bypasses the converter feed circuit and reduces the amount of fluid being supplied to the converter.
This reduction in converter pressure allows the converter to loosen up, reducing the load on the engine and giving racers another valuable tuning tool for controlling how the converter behaves.
The pressure gauge gives us a direct way to verify that the dump valve is functioning properly and allows us to monitor exactly what is happening hydraulically during testing.
This is just one of the many details we test and verify before putting one of our transmissions into a race car!
