We were at Principles and Values Daycare in Rhome this morning teaching our Heartsaver Adult/child/infant CPR/AED and first aid to new and seasoned staff members.
They were impressed with how hands-on the course was. Past instructors just showed videos and sent a certification.
That's not following guidelines for proper instruction. Hands on instruction is very important for knowledg retention. The scenarios and skills testing are designed to build confidence and help students apply the skills under pressure.
We use new Prestan manikins with immediate feedback and invested in multiple training tools like epi pens, narcan to provide a real-world training experience.

This morning we were at Mainstream Habilitation Services in Azle for the other half of their staff needing CPR renewals. Ashlee Conrad joined and taught with me to get her last class in to renew her instructor certification. She was instrumental in ensuring the staff had the proper skills and scenarios that they requested based on what little tools and resources they had available in the field.
These partnerships in the community and shared knowledge and experience are invaluable. I'm excited to see what Ashley builds and teaches with her CPR business.

Student question: would you do CPR on someone with a pacemaker? Wouldn't the pacemaker shock the heart?
If a patient with a pacemaker is in cardiac arrest (no pulse) proceed to do CPR. The pacemaker is not a defibrillator, it sends gentle steady electrical pulses to the heart to make the cardiac muscle contract.
If the pacemaker is no longer working correctly it is a "failure to capture". This could be caused by several factors, including but not limited to: drained battery, broken or dislodged lead wire, heart tissue scarred or diseased.
Regardless, we still call 911, do CPR, place the AED with the pads next to, not on top of, the pacemaker.

This past weekend, I had the privilege of training members of the TriCorps Security team in CPR, AED use, and life-saving emergency response skills.
Security professionals are often the first on scene when an emergency occurs. Whether it's a cardiac arrest, medical emergency, or workplace incident, having trained personnel who can take immediate action before EMS arrives can make all the difference.

Back at Mainstream Habilitation Services in Azle for 10 of their staff needing to renew their BLS. CPR renewals don't have to be boring. Humor adds a lot to the learning experience and helps with information retention. Plus, even after 20 years of EMS, there is ALWAYS something new and exciting to learn about.
