A new chapter began today at Point Mallard.

The newly renovated Decatur Event Center welcomed one of its first major gatherings, the eighth annual State of the Region. Formerly the Point Mallard Ice Complex, the facility has been transformed into a beautiful, versatile venue designed to host meetings, conferences, celebrations, and other events for Decatur and the North Alabama region.

Presented by Launch, the State of the Region brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and regional partners from across North Alabama. Launch represents a partnership of 13 counties working together and speaking with one voice to advance the region.

Mayor Kent Lawrence welcomed attendees to Decatur and celebrated the collaboration that continues to strengthen North Alabama.

Today’s event showcased more than a renewed facility. It demonstrated Decatur’s growing role as a place where communities connect, partnerships form, and the region moves forward together.

A new chapter for southeast Decatur is officially underway.

Today, Land Innovations broke ground on South Brook, beginning the transformation of the former Decatur Country Club property into one of the most significant developments in our city’s history.

Over the next 10 to 15 years, the 80-acre site along Country Club Road will become a new mixed-use neighborhood built around walkability, connection, homes, locally curated retail, gathering spaces, and access to the regional trail system.

The numbers tell part of the story: an estimated $1 billion in construction activity, a $40 million developer investment, and nearly $4 million in projected annual tax revenue.

“South Brook is more than a development project. It is an investment in Decatur’s future,” Mayor Kent Lawrence said. “What begins here today will help shape this part of our city for decades to come.”

South Brook represents a major investment in southeast Decatur and another sign of the confidence developers are placing in our city’s future.

The ground is moving. The landscape is changing. And South Brook is officially taking shape.
