🐾 New to Decatur, Hartselle, Priceville, Moulton, or anywhere in Morgan or Lawrence County? Osborne Animal Clinic has cared for this community since 1979, which means we've likely already treated a neighbor's pet, a coworker's dog, or a family member's cat β€” ask around, and there's a decent chance someone will vouch for us.

We're always glad to welcome new patients, whether your pet is a brand-new puppy or a senior who's been through a few vets before finding the right fit.

πŸ₯ Spaying and neutering remains one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your pet's long-term health. In female pets spayed before their first heat cycle, the risk of mammary tumors drops to nearly zero β€” after even one heat cycle, that protective effect diminishes significantly. In males, neutering eliminates testicular cancer risk entirely and reduces prostate issues.

Beyond the health benefits, it also tends to reduce roaming, marking, and some aggression-related behaviors.

If you have a young pet who hasn't been spayed or neutered yet, August is a good window to talk timing. Consult your vet.

🐾 The best part of this job, honestly, is watching pets grow up in this community. We've had puppies come in for their very first wellness exam who are now greeting us at the door for their annual visits like old friends β€” same nervous energy replaced by confident tail wags.

What's a moment with your pet's care team here that's genuinely stuck with you? We'd love to hear your story in the comments.

πŸ“‹ When's the last time your pet had a full wellness exam, not just a quick vaccine visit? An annual exam covers a lot of ground a quick glance at home never will: weight trend compared to last year, dental condition, heart and lung sounds through a stethoscope, joint mobility, and a hands-on check for any new lumps or skin changes.

A lot of early-stage issues β€” thyroid changes, heart murmurs, early arthritis β€” get caught during this exam specifically because they don't show obvious symptoms yet.

If it's been over a year, let's get your pet back on the schedule. πŸ“ž Call (256) 353-4339 or visit osborneanimalclinic.com to schedule.

πŸ₯΅ The heat advisory is continuing through Sunday β€” and our pets feel it, too.

With heat index values reaching 108Β° across North Alabama, it’s a good time to take extra precautions with your dogs and cats.

Some pets are at higher risk, including:
🐾 Flat-faced breeds like Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs and Shih Tzus
🐾 Senior pets
🐾 Overweight pets
🐾 Pets with heart or breathing problems
🐾 Dogs and cats with thick coats

Watch for signs of overheating:
β€’ Heavy panting or trouble breathing
β€’ Excessive drooling or sticky saliva
β€’ Red or dark gums and tongue
β€’ Weakness, stumbling or collapse

Keep your pets safe:
πŸ’§ Provide plenty of cool, clean water.
🏠 Keep pets indoors in air conditioning during the hottest part of the day.
🐾 Check pavement before walking β€” if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
πŸš— Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even with the windows cracked.

If your pet shows signs of heat illness, seek veterinary care promptly.

Stay cool, Decatur β€” and keep those four-legged family members safe! ❀️

🏠 Bring pets inside or provide a cool, shaded area.
πŸŒ… Plan walks and outdoor activity for early morning or evening.
πŸ”₯ Avoid hot pavement and asphalt.
πŸš— Never leave a pet inside a parked vehicle.

🐾 A cat's purr typically vibrates between 25 and 150 Hz β€” a frequency range that's been studied for its potential to promote healing in bones and soft tissue. So when your cat curls up on an injured spot and starts purring, there may genuinely be more going on than comfort alone.

What's the most interesting pet fact you've learned recently? We're always collecting new ones for these posts, so don't hold back.
