👻 Things that go bump in the night🎃

Think you know Decatur & Morgan County? Take a walk on the spooky side this fall. From haunted historic buildings and old cemeteries to mysterious local legends, there’s plenty of delicious terror waiting around every corner. 👀

🕯️ Old State Bank
925 Bank St NE, Decatur (not open for visitors)
Built in 1833 and the oldest standing bank in Alabama, the Old State Bank has a long and fascinating history and some stories of its own. Local lore tells of a Lady in White, a Lady in Black and spirits lingering in the old bank vault.

🎭 The Princess Theatre
112 2nd Ave NE, Decatur
This historic theatre dates back to 1887, when the building began as a livery stable. Today, it’s known not only for performances but also for decades of stories about footsteps, slamming doors, unexplained sounds and other paranormal happenings. 👻
Hours vary based on performances and events.

🪦 Lafayette Street Cemetery
Lafayette St, Decatur
Decatur’s oldest cemetery dates to 1818 and contains the graves of members of some of the city’s earliest families. And here’s the creepy part: the area was once known as “Dead Man’s Alley.” The name wasn’t because of the cemetery but bodies were reportedly found nearby.
Open to the public; please be respectful.

🌉 Cry Baby Hollow — Hartselle
Hartselle, AL
One of Morgan County’s most infamous pieces of local folklore. Depending on who tells the story, the legend involves a baby, a mother, a wreck or even a Civil War-era tragedy. The one thing the stories agree on? Something is said to cry from the hollow.

🏚️ Old Decatur Historic District
Downtown Decatur
Take a slow evening stroll through the streets of one of Alabama’s best preserved collections of Victorian and Craftsman era homes. The historic district is beautiful during the day… but when the sun goes down, the old houses and quiet streets take on a whole different atmosphere. 🕯️

⚔️ Take the Civil War Walking Tour
Start near Downtown Decatur
Follow the history of the 1864 Battle of Decatur through the historic districts. With preserved homes, old streets and stories from one of the most important periods in Decatur’s history, this is a perfect spooky-season activity for history lovers.

For those who prefer their mysteries to be historical rather than supernatural, explore original photographs, newspapers, court records and other pieces of Morgan County’s past. You might even uncover a story that belongs on this list. 👀

Bring the kiddos downtown for a fun night of trick or treating! Businesses participating on 2nd and Bank Street. City Center Village will have special Halloween activities in their parking lot.
