Agape Transformation Practice

Helping high-capacity women, leaders, and organizations strengthen leadership, prevent burnout, and create success that doesn't require sacrificing yourself.

Therapy, leadership advising, speaking, and transformative experiences.

I'm sitting in a CE training today learning about "neuroception", and I immediately started thinking about how this shows up at work.

Have you ever had someone say something to you and, before you knew it, you were already irritated, defensive, anxious, or ready to explain yourself?

Or you got the infamous:

“Can we talk?”

And your mind had written, produced, and directed the entire movie before the meeting even happened.

Our bodies are constantly taking in information from our environment. And sometimes we're reacting not only to what actually happened, but to the meaning we've attached to it.

That matters in leadership.

A question can feel like criticism.

Silence can feel like disapproval.

Feedback can feel like rejection.

Someone else's frustration can suddenly feel like something you're responsible for fixing.

And if we're not aware of what's happening internally, we can respond to the **story** instead of the situation.

That's why I'm so interested in what happens to us under pressure.

Thought my goal is not to never get activated.

We're human. We will.

But can we create enough space to ask:

What actually happened?

What am I feeling?

And what story did I add to it?

Feeling urgency doesn't always mean something is urgent.

Feeling threatened doesn't necessarily mean someone is threatening you.

And having an internal reaction doesn't mean that reaction has to make the next decision.

Sometimes a "Sovereign Pause" is enough to change what happens next.

Therapists spend so much time creating safe spaces for everyone else.

We need spaces for ourselves, too.

I’m excited to be facilitating a FREE workshop with the Therapist Resource Network on October 27:

Functioning vs. Capacity™: When Being Good at the Work Hides What It’s Costing You

Because therapists can be excellent at the work and still be tired.

We can show up fully for our clients while ignoring what we need.

We can manage the caseload, documentation, business, family and responsibilities—and assume that because we're getting it done, we're okay.

I want us to talk about the difference between being able to function and actually having capacity.

And I want more therapists to know about the Therapist Resource Network.

TRN is building a professional community where therapists can connect, learn, access resources and receive support from people who understand the realities of this work.

If you've been looking for more professional connection and community, I invite you to join us.

Tuesday, October 27
3:00–4:00 PM ET
FREE for therapists

And tag or share this with another therapist. Sometimes the person who spends all day supporting everyone else needs someone to think of them, too.

Concious living is changing my life in such unexpected ways.🥰

I drink a gallon of water a day now.

I've tried doing this before, but back then it was all willpower.

I had to remind myself to drink. I’d look at the time, see how much water was left and tell myself, Karrion, you need to drink your water.

Something has changed this time.

Now my body interrupts me.

“I’m thirsty.”

And it is firm about it.

The signal has become so clear that it actually feels uncomfortable to ignore it.

I don't think my body suddenly learned how to tell me it was thirsty. I think I became better at listening.

And that made me think about all the other ways we override ourselves.

We’re tired, but we keep going.

We need a break, but there’s too much to do.

We don't have the capacity for one more thing, but we say yes anyway.

Something doesn't feel right, but we convince ourselves we're fine.

When you’ve spent years being the dependable one, overriding yourself can become second nature.

Conscious living requires us to notice again.

To hear what our bodies are saying.

To pay attention to what we need.

And to respond before the whisper has to become a scream.

For me, right now, the lesson happens to come with a gallon jug of water.

What have you become better at hearing from yourself?

One of the freedoms we don't talk about enough is this:

You are allowed to reconsider something that is working.

You don't have to hate your job to want something different.

Your relationship doesn't have to be terrible for you to want more from it.

You don't have to be exhausted before you change how much you're carrying.

And your life doesn't have to be falling apart before you ask whether it still fits you.

We give ourselves permission to change when we have enough evidence that something is wrong.

But what about when you've simply grown?

What about when the woman who made those choices isn't quite the same woman anymore?

What about when good is still good...but it's no longer what you want?

You don't have to make something bad in order to choose something different.

You can be grateful for what was and still be honest about what is.

That's part of the conversation we're having at Beyond Functioning™

A day to get out of the routine of managing your life and give yourself room to notice what is true for you now.

There is a point where more information stops being the answer.

You've read the books.

You've listened to the podcasts.

You've gone to therapy.

You've taken the leadership training.

You have planners, systems, goals and strategies.

And if somebody gives you a good enough plan, you can probably execute the hell out of it.

But there are some questions a strategy can't answer.

What do I want?

What am I no longer available for?

What am I doing because I chose it and what am I doing because I've become accustomed to it?

Who am I when I'm not solving, producing, helping or accomplishing something?

Those answers don't come from another five-step plan.

They require enough space to hear yourself.

That's one of the reasons I created **Beyond Functioning™.

We're not spending a day adding more things to your to-do list.

We're creating room for you to examine the life underneath the list.

Because the next chapter of your life may not require a better strategy.

It may require a more conscious choice.

Beyond Functioning™ is not for everybody. And that's intentional.

There are seasons when we're simply not interested in looking any deeper.

What we're doing is working well enough.

We're not asking bigger questions.

We're not interested in changing anything.

That's okay.

But then there are seasons when something shifts.

You start noticing yourself differently.

Things you've accepted for years suddenly deserve another conversation.

You become less willing to make decisions simply because they're practical, expected, or what you've always done.

You start wanting more than a life that works.

You want a life that feels like it belongs to you.

That's the woman I'm creating this experience for.

Not the woman who needs to be convinced.

The woman who's ready to get honest about what she wants, what she no longer wants, and what she's willing to choose from here.

If that's where you are, there's a seat for you.

You don't have to wait until you're miserable to make a change.

I think a lot of capable women forget that.

We wait until we're exhausted enough.

Unhappy enough.

Frustrated enough.

Until the relationship is bad enough, the job is unbearable enough, or our bodies finally say, “We're not doing this anymore.”

Then we feel justified in wanting something different.

But what if nothing is terribly wrong?

What if you're grateful AND there's more you want?

What if your life is good AND something in you is ready for a different way of living it?

You don't need to create a case for wanting more.

And you certainly don't have to wait for your life to fall apart before you give yourself permission to pay attention to yourself.

Beyond Functioning™ is a day for that.

Not because you need fixing.

Because sometimes a woman who has spent years building a good life needs room to ask:

What would make this life feel more like mine?

There comes a point when being able to handle something is no longer a good enough reason to keep handling it.

That's a hard distinction for capable women.

Because we can make almost anything work.

We can adjust to the schedule.
Carry the responsibility.
Navigate the relationship.
Meet the expectation.
Keep producing.

And after a while, “I can” starts making decisions that “I want” was never consulted about.

That's worth paying attention to.

Not because you need to blow up your life.

But because you deserve to know where you're living by choice and where you're living by momentum.

That's part of what we're making room for at Beyond Functioning™.

One day to step outside of everything you normally manage and turn your attention toward the woman doing all the managing.

Stop showing me your résumé.

I know you're accomplished.

I know people depend on you.

I know you've built a career, handled responsibilities, made things happen, and figured out more than your fair share.

I'm not questioning whether you're capable.

I'm asking about you.

Are you enjoying the life you've worked so hard to build?

Do you know what you want now—not what makes sense, not what everyone needs from you, not what's next on the list?

And when was the last time you gave yourself enough room to even ask?

Your accomplishments tell me what you've done.

They don't necessarily tell me how connected you are to the woman who did it.

That's why I created Beyond Functioning™

Not because something is wrong with you.

Not because your life is falling apart.

But because being good at managing your life and being fully present in it are not the same thing.
