A family-oriented preschool where we strive to promote the development of the whole child.

Complaining is not the problem. Getting stuck there can be.

Children need space to express frustration, disappointment and anger. But when adults immediately dismiss the complaint or rush in with the answer, children may lose an opportunity to practice thinking through the problem themselves.

A more helpful response is simple:

“I hear you. What do you think we could do about it?”

This validates the emotion while gently moving the child toward agency. Research on autonomy-supportive parenting suggests children benefit when adults follow their pace, invite their ideas and provide only the help they need. Supportive questions can encourage children to identify the problem, consider alternatives and play an active role in choosing what happens next.

That does not mean every complaint needs an instant solution. Sometimes a child is overwhelmed and needs comfort before problem-solving. Connection comes first. Once they feel understood, you can help them take the next small step.

The goal is not to raise children who never complain. It is to raise children who learn that difficult feelings are real, problems can be approached and asking for help is different from waiting to be rescued.

Try it tonight. Listen first, then ask: “What do you think might help?”

How silly the dance is when you're holding the boundary turns out to be more important than you might think, and it has a connection to something that goes beyond that single moment.

A while back, I asked my followers what it was that really made them feel close to their parents, and the answer was not the major conversations or the perfect decisions but the little, steady things; repeatedly, people stated that emotional safety stemmed from the way parents reacted when difficulties arose.

What occurs when you act silly while setting a limit is that you're not yielding, instead you're showing your child that saying "no" isn't something to be afraid of and that you're safe even if they rebel. As one person put it, boundaries never made them feel unsafe because the relationship always remained steady.

If you'd like to read the full analysis of what adults said was most important 20 years later and how it relates to boundaries, connection, and trust, then leave the comment 'TRUST,' and I'll send you the full issue.

Keep up with us for more parenting advice which is based on research and combines structure with warmth, without requiring perfection.

What silly trick do you use to get your child to cooperate? Please put it in the comments below since I'm always on the lookout for new ideas. 👇
