I've been meaning to share some of my favorite books from my studio library on here for a while. This book was printed by Gwen Frostic with original lino cuts (or by someone working for her), most likely on one of her Heidelberg Presses. While the business model that made her millions from lino cuts would most likely not work in 2026, her legacy is nothing short of amazing and I do hope that, like her, I can still be making art at 90. I especially appreciate the passage I'm reading here that reminds us that we are not passive viewers of nature.... But ARE NATURE. 💚

🖼️: The Human Condition, Rene Magritte, 1933

Thinking about what this piece might mean in 2026. For an update to the current human condition, I think one might need to add a painting of the palette, a self-portrait of the artist painting from behind, and a comment section full of people asking what materials to buy and tutorials to watch to replicate the entire thing. Did I miss anything?

The Queen of Cups is charming, but her beauty is not performative. She is more likely to tend a luscious garden that no-one ever sees than to influence others to garden on social media. And she is just as likely to dress up to attend an event solo than to go with a date. She sits half way in the world that is known to us, and half-way into a world that is clouded in watery mystery. It will not be without its efforts, but If you are lucky enough to get close to her, you will be duly rewarded. If this is a card you have pulled for yourself, some much needed self-care and reflection may be needed. This might look like an entire day spent in an art museum with no particular agenda in mind or cozying up with a bubble bath and a good book.

Resharing this print that I first designed over 5 years ago because I'm proud to say that I have mastered enough basic Photoshop skills to finally make a digital reproduction that looks almost identical to my original linocut! (The irony of this is that multiple people have already stolen this image from the internet and made beautiful forgeries... And it has taken me months to get enough technical computer skills to compete with them!)
Starting this year I am offering select digital archival prints at a more affordable price than my original linocuts. Original Lino cuts and mixed media illustrations will continue to be signed and numbered in limited editions.( Most of you who collect my work continue to surprise me by buying the originals at the higher price, but I'm happy to offer a slightly more affordable option that still comes hand signed and numbered from my one-woman studio. )
