🥶Frozen pipes are the silent winter villain, everything’s fine until suddenly it’s very much not fine. Let’s not do that this year.

Here’s your no-drama, keep-the-water-flowing game plan:

🔥 1. Keep your thermostat consistent

Don’t let the house dip too low at night. Even if you’re trying to save on heating, keep it at least 55°F even when you’re out of town.

🚪 2. Open cabinet doors

Got sinks on outside walls? Open the cabinet doors so warm air can circulate around the pipes.
Yes, your kitchen will look mildly chaotic. It’s fine.

💧 3. Let faucets drip (just a little)

When temps drop below freezing, let one or two faucets trickle , especially ones on exterior walls.
Moving water = harder to freeze. Think “slow and steady,” not Niagara Falls.

🧣 4. Insulate exposed pipes

Basement, garage, crawl space pipes = prime freeze targets.
Foam pipe sleeves are cheap and wildly effective. A five-minute DIY that can save thousands.

🚰 5. Disconnect outdoor hoses

And shut off exterior spigots if you can. Drain them. This one’s big — hose bibs crack all the time in winter.

🏠 6. If you’re leaving town…
• Keep heat on (again, minimum 55°F)
• Shut off the main water supply if you want extra peace of mind
• Ask someone to check the house during extreme cold

If a pipe does freeze:
• Turn on the faucet
• Apply heat gently (hair dryer, space heater — never open flame)
• Start near the faucet and work backward

And if you ever walk into a house and think, “Why does it sound like water is running inside the walls?” — that’s your cue to act fast.
