The Italian Table

Whenever we had a big family get-together, my Zio Franco was the king of the Zeppole.

He’d set up a big pot of oil in the backyard, and we’d all watch as he dropped spoonfuls of soft dough into the sizzle. They’d puff up into these funny, golden, imperfect shapes.

He always declared that the most misshapen ones tasted the best.

We’d all crowd around, fingers sticky with powdered sugar, impatiently waiting for the next warm batch. It’s one of my happiest memories—that feeling of us all together, sharing something so simple and so wonderful.
