On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger ordered that the Emancipation Proclamation be enforced in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Proclamation. That day is now known as Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Today, Juneteenth is recognized as an official flag-flying holiday. The American flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset in observance of this important day in American history.

Memorial Day, observed each year on the last Monday in May, honors the servicemembers who gave their lives in service to the United States.

On this day, the American flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised briskly to full-staff for the remainder of the day. This unique tradition reflects both remembrance and resolve: mourning the fallen in the morning, and honoring their sacrifice by continuing forward in the afternoon.

When lowering to half-staff, remember to raise the flag to the top first, then lower it slowly to the halfway position. At noon, raise it back to full-staff.

Peace Officers Memorial Day honors the federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who have lost their lives or been injured in the line of duty.

This day is recognized as a half-staff observance across the United States. The American flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset as a mark of respect and remembrance.

To set your flag at half-staff, quickly raise it to the top of your flagpole, then slowly lower it down to the halfway point.

May 8 marks Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), commemorating the Allied victory in Europe during World War II in 1945. On this day, Germany formally surrendered, bringing the war in Europe to an end.
