October 5 was designated Nimitz Day in 1945 to honor Admiral Chester W. Nimitz as he received a second Gold Star for his service as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas during WWII. Nimitz's hometown is Fredericksburg, Texas. These photographs are from the parade commemorating Admiral Nimitz's return to the United States. The O. Henry Collection on The Portal to Texas History contains over 100 short stories, compilation books, and collected works from the Texas author William Sydney Porter, a.k.a. O. Henry. Often presented as they first appeared in the popular magazines of his time, O. Henry’s stories focus on “regular” people and everyday life across the world.

One of our Special Collections Librarians stumbled upon this article while looking for something else in the September 11, 1913 edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle. So many questions... One being, did Denton not have squirrels in 1913? 😅🐿

New to The Portal to Texas History is artwork from the National Museum of the Pacific War Digital Archive by Floyd Kelly, Jr.
The artwork offers a unique insight into the mentality and daily lives of soldiers in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II. Drafted to the Navy in September 1943, Floyd Kelly, Jr. spent much of his time on board the USS Napa drawing. His sketches, often confined to a small 8 x 13 cm. notebook, include depictions of everyday life in the Navy, landscapes across the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, ships at sea, and snapshots of intense warfare.
