The UNT College of Engineering is deeply saddened to share the passing of Michael Hill Jr., a Computer Science major and valued member of our academic community.

Michael was a dedicated student whose presence in the classroom reflected curiosity, engagement and a willingness to think critically. He was known by faculty for actively participating in discussions, offering thoughtful perspectives and approaching his studies with intention. His ability to engage with course material and contribute to the learning environment left a lasting impression on those around him.

At the time of his passing, Michael was enrolled in upper-level coursework, including his capstone, and was nearing the completion of his degree. His progress and commitment made this loss especially difficult for the peers and faculty who had the opportunity to support his academic journey.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates and all who knew him. We invite those who have memories of Michael to share them as we honor his life and the impact he made within our community.

He will be deeply missed by the UNT Engineering community.

The College of Engineering is proud to recognize Dr. Yan Huang, Regents Professor in our Computer Science & Engineering, for being named to the AI 75 by Dallas Innovates.

As a leader in geospatial artificial intelligence, Dr. Huang’s work is advancing how AI interprets and applies location-based data. Her research spans spatiotemporal modeling, mobility intelligence and distributed sensing, with real-world applications that strengthen disaster response, improve traffic forecasting and support infrastructure monitoring.

Dr. Huang’s contributions continue to shape the field. In 2025, she published 10 papers, including a Best Paper Candidate at ACM SIGSPATIAL, and is currently leading $6 million in active research projects. Her work includes AI-powered distributed sensing for the Department of Defense and real-time roadway debris detection for the Texas Department of Transportation.

A two-time ACM SIGSPATIAL 10-Year Impact Award recipient and ACM Distinguished Member, Dr. Huang’s research has earned nearly 8,000 citations and continues to influence the future of GeoAI.

We are proud to see her work recognized at this level and grateful for the impact she continues to make through research, leadership and innovation.
