Christmas morning at the jobsite: the ICF blocks are here.
Every one of these white blocks is a form AND permanent insulation in one. They stack, they lock together, they get filled with rebar and concrete — and then they never leave. Instant R-value on both faces of a structural concrete wall.
The neighbors definitely think we're building a house out of styrofoam. Wait till they hear what's going INSIDE the styrofoam.

POUR DAY. The best day in construction, full stop.
There's nothing like the first concrete hitting the forms. Months of planning, weeks of dirt work, and now the house officially begins to EXIST. That boom pump can place concrete exactly where we need it — no wheelbarrow marathon, just precision.
Concrete waits for no one. When the trucks roll, everybody moves with purpose. Chaos to an outsider, choreography to us.
First pour: done. Foundation walls: coming right up (literally).

Let's talk about the least Instagram-famous thing on a jobsite: trench safety.
A cubic yard of soil weighs about 3,000 lbs — as much as a car. When a trench wall lets go, it lets go all at once. That's why deep trenches get shoring: steel panels and braces that hold the earth back while crews work.
It's not fast. It's not cheap. It's non-negotiable. Everybody goes home at the end of the day — that's the first spec on every job we run.

First concrete of the build, in 15 seconds.
There are two kinds of people: those who slow down and look when passing a jobsite on pour day, and those who don't
Next week, the part you've been waiting for: the giant foam LEGO blocks come out.

And… dig.
This week the excavator earns its keep. We're going down about nine feet for a full basement - in ICF construction, the basement walls get the same treatment as everything above: foam forms, rebar, solid concrete.
Fun fact: the average full-basement excavation moves 300-400 cubic yards of soil. That's roughly 40 dump truck loads. You don't appreciate a hole until you've paid to have one made.

OSHA has not approved this use of safety equipment.
Somewhere between "site layout" and "excavation" my crew unionized and demanded a recess. Negotiations were short. They won.
Building a house with your family means the jobsite is also the backyard. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Measure twice. Then measure again. Then have your kids double-check you.
Layout day is where the house stops living on paper and starts living on the lot. Every wall, every corner, every utility pe*******on gets located NOW. An inch of sloppiness here becomes a nightmare at the foundation, a disaster at framing, and a legend at the roof.
The most expensive tool on any jobsite is still a $20 tape measure used carelessly.

The real crew of the Dog House build.
Yes, that's my son in the operator's seat (parked, keys out, ear pro on - safety first, always). And yes, those little hands learned to finish concrete this summer.
I'm not just building a house here. I'm building people who know what hard work feels like, what it means to make something with your hands, and what it looks like when Dad says he's going to do something and then does it.
Best jobsite perk there is.

Moving day - for the machines.
Mini excavator, skid steer, and a whole lot of diesel. Before anything goes UP, a few hundred yards of dirt have to come OUT. Site work is the least glamorous part of any build and one of the most important: get your grades, drainage, and compaction wrong here and the best foundation in the world won't save you.
We take our time on dirt work. The house you can't see below grade is the one holding up the house you can.

So what exactly is ICF? Let me break it down.
ICF stands for Insulated Concrete Forms - big hollow blocks of dense foam that stack like oversized LEGO. You stack them into walls, drop rebar inside, and fill the core with concrete. The foam stays on forever, giving you built-in insulation on BOTH sides of a solid concrete wall.
What that gets you:
- Walls that laugh at extreme weather
- Energy bills that can run 30-50% lower than stick-frame
- A house so quiet you'll hear yourself think
- Fire resistance measured in hours, not minutes
This is the system we used for the entire Dog house build - basement to roofline. Questions about ICF? Drop them below, I answer everything.
