Myles Pearson has held opinions and perspectives many people in the disability community do, but when he chatted with Jacqueline, the founder of Dateability, she unknowingly called him out for his POV. Suddenly, Myles thoughts shifted.
Head to our blog (and check out his!) to read the brilliant words of Myles Pearson 🧑🏻💻

An excerpt reads, “So saying, “I probably wouldn’t date a disabled woman” suddenly becomes an incredibly broad statement. Which disabled woman? What disability? What can she do? What does she enjoy? Is she adventurous? Does she want children? Does she make me laugh? Can she reach things on the top shelf, because at 4ft 10 I do have to think practically sometimes? … Do we fancy each other?”
Slide 2: Myles with his dog. An excerpt reads, “Ableism is very easy to spot when somebody else is doing it to you. It’s much harder when you realise you may actually be ableist too.”
Slide 3: Myles wearing a striped shirt and sunglasses. An excerpt reads, “What has changed is my assumption that another disabled person couldn’t offer me that. I’ve spent years wanting women to look beyond my wheelchair before deciding what dating me might be like. It tells them very little about the person sitting in it. It doesn’t tell them what I want from life or whether we’d still be talking three hours after ordering dinner.”

Love is seeing each other for exactly who you are. ❤️
[Alt Text Slide 1: A cream colored marble background with an ivory text box with red hearts titled, “We Found Love…” The text reads, “This is our love story that could only be made possible on Dateability. Where else could a Virginia born quadriplegic meet another quadriplegic with CP from Massachusetts and fall in love? Before Amber, I tried multiple sites to try and find connection, but all the other sites made you pay an amount I could not afford because of my finances. Dateability is a free site that any disabled person can use, whether chronically ill, intellectually disabled, on the spectrum or having a psychiatric disability. I was born with a deep loneliness that nothing could fill. I used to go through life with constant dread of holidays, birthdays and any social occasion. Mainly because I did not have anyone special. Amber made me a plaque that says “Of all the weird things I’ve found online, you’re by far my favorite.” I would echo this sentiment. I used to say to my friends that I read romance novels because I knew that was the closest thing that I could have to a true romance. I used to imagine that I was the author Henry Miller, who wrote erotic novels detailing his exploits with women, but now, after meeting Amber, I realized that love is a combination of eroticism and compassion. Thank you Dateability for helping me find the love of my life. -Daniel.”]

If l did talk to anyone, it never lasted more than a few weeks, eventually I stopped trying entirely. By the time I joined Dateability I was pretty convinced that love was not in the cards for me, and I was mostly okay with that. I have a good life.I have a tamily who loves and supports me, good friends and a job that fulfils me. I actually joined the app to prove a point to a friend about how it wouldn’t work for me. A couple of weeks later I met Daniel and very quickly realized how wrong ! was.
