Just before Christmas, Samantha’s 2003 Ford Explorer finally broke down after more than 214,000 miles.

As a single mother, losing her vehicle meant much more than losing transportation. It put her job, her children’s education, and even their ability to celebrate Christmas at risk.

That’s when SparkHope stepped in and helped Samantha obtain a reliable, new-to-her vehicle.

“Because of this incredible program, I was able to continue working and supporting my family. I could keep getting my children where they needed to be and continue prioritizing their education. I was also able to give them a Christmas during a time when our circumstances could have easily taken that joy away from us.”

For Samantha and her family, this vehicle meant stability, security, independence, and hope. It meant one unexpected crisis didn’t have to derail everything she had worked to build.

“You did not simply help me replace a vehicle. You helped me protect the life I have worked so hard to build for my children.”

This is why SparkHope exists. Reliable transportation can be the difference between keeping a job and losing one, getting children where they need to go and missing opportunities, or moving forward and falling behind.

From Samantha:

“I truly could not have done it without SparkHope’s single-mothers program. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in mothers like me and for giving families like mine the support, stability, and hope we need to keep moving forward.”

What a Saturday.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Under the Hood at SparkHope Automotive and helped make the day such a success. We loved seeing neighbors come together, connect with local resources, enjoy breakfast, and learn a little more about what SparkHope is all about.

A special thank you to Benefits in Action, Hope Starts Here Food Bank, Thrive Colorado, Village Exchange Center, Women Who Charge, University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center, and Aurora Fire Rescue for spending your Saturday with us and helping us engage and support our community. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and resources each of you brought to the event.

And of course, thank you to our volunteers, staff, families, and everyone who stopped by. Under the Hood was about bringing people together and connecting our neighbors with organizations that are doing meaningful work across our community. We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

Thank you for showing up for Aurora and for SparkHope.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who spent part of their Saturday with us at SparkHope North!

It was a hot one, but our volunteers showed up. Together, we dug holes, unloaded trees, got them into the ground, and planted all of the trees along the front strip. It already looks so much better, and we simply couldn’t have made that kind of progress without you.

We’re not quite finished yet.

Our team will be back out tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 2, with an auger and Bobcat to help us get this project across the finish line. If you have an hour or two and want to lend a hand, we’d love to have you. No pressure, just extra hands welcome.

Thank you again to everyone helping us create a more beautiful and welcoming place for the women we serve.

Storytime: Meet Our Friend Lashay.

Lashay became a mom at 17 and has spent years working, raising her son, and building a career in healthcare. In 2023, she made a major decision: leave the medical assistant job she had held for seven years and return to school full time to become a radiologic technologist.

The transition wasn’t easy.

“It’s not as much rainbows as it sounds. It’s been a struggle.”

While attending the Community College of Denver, Lashay found SparkHope Automotive through the school’s community resources. As she traveled between school and clinical rotations at hospitals across Denver, keeping her car on the road became critical.

“If I didn’t have transportation, I would have to take the bus or several buses or Uber. When you’re not working and you don’t have an income, those are not options.”

When her vehicle began having serious mechanical problems, SparkHope was there.

“I was having a car problem, but it wasn’t a problem. My car was in the shop. It felt good to say something was being done.”

Eventually, that vehicle reached the end of the road, and SparkHope helped place Lashay in another vehicle.

Today, Lashay has graduated, passed her X-ray and mammography registries, and works full time as a mammographer. Her son is now 16, and she’s teaching him to drive in the car SparkHope helped provide.

When we asked what she would tell another mom considering SparkHope, her answer was simple:

“Do it. Don’t second guess it.”

“The program is very trustworthy. They go above and beyond for their clients.”
