Body movin'...

I see this A LOT with younger defensemen...

They rely on their stick to stop a dodging attackman, rather than getting their body in the right position.

I promise it'll be harder for him to run through your body than your stick or arm.

To extend or not to extend?…

Contact vs. Drive Part 2

If our goal is to drive an attackman off his arc or away from the goal, younger defensemen have a tendency to extend their arms and forget to move their feet.

Keeping the arms in and pushing with the legs can help maintain better body posture and leverage when driving.

Let it slide…

If you’re the slide guy on defense, then knowing when to go is one of the most important skills to master.

However, you also have to know WHERE you’re sliding to…

The guy on the ball has to do his job to force his player to a spot where the slide can be effective, even if he’s beat

The responsibility isn’t 100% up to the slide guy as a result, but you have to read the play and adjust your slide accordingly.

It’s all about timing…

As young defenders we try to hack away at our guy’s arms.

But there’s a method to the madness…

Time the checks. Keep your stick quiet but active.

Quiet stick doesn’t mean it has to be asleep.

Active stick doesn’t mean you’re swinging for the fences.

Practice how you play...

I say this A LOT.

Whenever I set up a drill with cones, players forget about a real game situation...

So they just line up at the cone like they're starting a race, completely forgetting that cones don't exist on the field during a game.

Crazy important to dial this in so the drills actually translate to a game situation.
