We need to stop asking ESL students, "Do you understand?" 👀

Because a "yes" doesn't necessarily mean they've understood.

Students might not want to interrupt. They might not want to look confused. Or they might genuinely think they understand.

Instead, ask questions that make their thinking visible:

🔹 "Can you explain it in your own words?"

🔹 "Can you give me an example?"

🔹 "Can you teach it to your partner?"

That gives you something a simple "yes" never can: evidence of learning.

As Kalaivani Pallavanraja shares in this Teacher Tip, checking for understanding isn't about asking if students understand. It's about finding out.

💬 What's your go-to way to check for understanding in your ESL classroom?

Is your ESL teaching career as stable as you'd like it to be?

You've built your teaching career over years, but how much of it depends on factors outside your control?

A platform changes its pay structure. A school contract doesn't get renewed. A regular student moves on.

When your income depends too heavily on one source, one change can disrupt everything.

So how can experienced ESL teachers build a career that's more resilient, sustainable, and stable?

That's the focus of our upcoming BridgeVoices webinar:

👉 Diversify, Retain, Repeat: How Experienced ESL Teachers Build Career Stability

We'll explore how to diversify where and how you teach, strengthen the teaching relationships you already have, and use the right tools and systems to make those choices sustainable - without simply adding more to your plate.

Whether you teach on a platform, at a school, independently, or combine all three, you'll come away with practical strategies for reducing your dependence on any single income source and keeping students engaged and coming back.

Your students may know the language… but speaking spontaneously takes practice.

Great conversations start with the right questions.

In adult ESL classes, meaningful discussions help learners:

✅ Connect English to their personal and professional goals
✅ Build confidence expressing their ideas
✅ Practice real communication beyond the textbook

The best discussion questions don't just test vocabulary or grammar - they encourage learners to share experiences, opinions, and perspectives.

Teaching the test? Or teaching learners to succeed beyond it?

Preparing students for exams isn't about memorizing question types or drilling practice tests. It's about helping learners build the confidence and communication skills they need to perform well - both on test day and in real life.

In this excerpt from our latest BridgeVoices webinar, Fajarudin Akbar shares how he prepares learners for English proficiency exams by focusing on meaningful language development, not just test strategies.

Business English that connects starts with understanding your learners.

Should you teach adults, kids, or both?

There isn't a right answer - only the right fit for your teaching goals and the learners you want to support.

If you enjoy meaningful conversations, real-world topics, and helping learners achieve specific goals, teaching adults may be the path for you. If you thrive on creativity, interactive lessons, and seeing young learners build confidence, teaching kids could be a better match.

One of the biggest advantages of an English teaching career is that you don't have to choose just one path. Many teachers work with both adults and kids, building a more flexible career and expanding the ways they teach.

The key is finding the teaching environment where you can do your best work - whether that's in a classroom, online, or somewhere in between.

Which learners sound like the best fit for you?

💬 Comment Adults, Kids or Both below, and you'll find the link to the full article in the first reply.
