On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, delivering the news that enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone—it's a celebration of family, community, and the hard-won freedom to live, love, and heal fully.
Denver is home to one of the nation's largest and longest-running Juneteenth celebrations. Dating back to the early 1950s, our city's observance has grown into a cherished annual tradition centered in the historic Five Points neighborhood, often referred to as the "Harlem of the West" (and home to the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library).
Tomorrow, Denver Public Library will be marching in the Juneteenth Parade. We hope to see you there!
A few spots are still open for MakerCamp at Central next week!
Designed for tweens ages 9–13, this free five-day camp is all about building something together. This year, campers will team up to design and construct their own cardboard carnival games from scratch. At the end of the week, they'll invite family and friends to come play.
Camp starts Monday, June 22. Spots are limited, so register today: https://denlib.org/central-maker-camp-2026
