Being on Earth with Clare Scott at Sync Gallery, Denver, Co. From Sept 17 to Oct. 11.
This painting of an elk, like all of my paintings in the Being On Earth exhibit at Denver's SYNC Gallery, started with photographing the wildlife of the Rocky Mountain region. To explore color and composition, I created small studies of each animal on paper. For this series of paintings, I wanted to really simplify the background landscape and emphasize the animal, so I separated each painting into two parts. First, I painted the canvases with layers of acrylic paint and let that thoroughly dry. Then I used oil paint to add the animal, their shadow, and a suggestion of landscape. Echoes of Time and Place, a 20" x 20" acrylic and oil on canvas painting, is now on view in the Being on Earth exhibit at SYNC Gallery in Denver, Colorado.

Sometimes it's nice to zoom in and see the details. Such as with this closeup of Whispers We Never Hear, a 36"x36" acrylic and oil on canvas by Monica Hokeilen, now on view in the Being on Earth exhibit at SYNC Gallery in Denver's Arts District on Santa Fe. Of course, art is always better seen in person, so plan a visit - the gallery is open Thurs - Sun, now through Oct 11.
