Today, we honor the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month by remembering the icons who paved the way. ✊🏽

We remember Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, a giant of Denver’s Chicano Movement, founder of the Crusade for Justice, and a tireless advocate for Chicano rights, cultural pride, and community empowerment.

Born out of that very movement, Servicios de La Raza carries this legacy forward every day. Our mission remains rooted in providing culturally responsive human services to empower individuals and families. ¿SABÍAS QUÉ? ¡El 14 de septiembre de 1824, Chiapas declaró oficialmente su incorporación a México! 🇲🇽✨

Tras independizarse de España, Chiapas quedó dividida entre unirse a México, unirse a Guatemala o seguir siendo independiente. Ciudades como San Cristóbal favorecían a México, mientras que Tuxtla prefería a Guatemala. El asunto se decidió mediante una consulta popular directa, y el 12 de septiembre de 1824 el pueblo eligió a México, lo que llevó a la declaración formal dos días después.

Dato extra: ¡La región fronteriza del Soconusco se mantuvo neutral y no se unió a México sino hasta 1842!

DID YOU KNOW? On September 14, 1824, Chiapas officially declared its incorporation into Mexico! 🇲🇽✨

After gaining independence from Spain, Chiapas was divided on whether to join Mexico, join Guatemala, or stay independent. Cities like San Cristóbal favored Mexico, while Tuxtla favored Guatemala. The issue went to a direct public vote, and on September 12, 1824, the people chose Mexico, leading to the formal declaration two days later.

Bonus fact: The border region of Soconusco stayed neutral and didn't join Mexico until 1842!

On September 11, we remember all those lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks, including the estimated 250+ Latino and Hispanic victims whose lives were cut short at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville.

Their stories reflect the strength, diversity, and dedication of our community:

- First responders who selflessly ran toward danger to save others.

- Essential service and hospitality workers at Windows on the World, maintaining building operations, and delivering goods.

- Corporate professionals driving innovation across financial and technology sectors.

- Migrant workers and day laborers, many of whom played a critical role in the months-long recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

Today, we honor their memory, uplift their families, and reaffirm our solidarity with everyone impacted by this historic tragedy. Nunca los olvidaremos. 🕊️
