How long should it take the U.S. government to decide whether the spouse of a U.S. citizen can receive a green card and legally build a life with their family in America?

Nearly two years?

What about a lawful permanent resident applying for U.S. citizenship? Should that take more than a year?

Since the beginning of 2025, processing times across most major immigration categories have increased dramatically. These are not just numbers on a government website. Every additional month means more uncertainty, financial strain, disrupted plans, and anxiety for U.S. citizens and their immigrant family members.

Meanwhile, the federal government created an expedited refugee program specifically for white South Africans that has processed some cases in a matter of months.

American families deserve a fair, functional immigration system. They should not be forced to put their lives on hold for years while applications sit waiting for review.

I spoke with Angeline McCall at 9NEWS (KUSA) about one of the most frustrating issues affecting families currently navigating the U.S. immigration system: rapidly increasing processing times.

For marriage-based green card applicants in Colorado, cases that not long ago were often completed in less than a year can now take significantly longer. The unpredictability makes it increasingly difficult for families to plan their lives, employment, travel, and other major decisions. One of the first things I now tell prospective clients is that immigration timelines have become extremely difficult to predict. Some cases still move surprisingly quickly, while others can take one to two years or longer.
