The power of community demonstrated that night raised thousands of dollars for the women, gender diverse people, and children that access The Gathering Place for essential needs, a safe place to land, and an inclusive, supportive community. 40 years down. “Philanthropy is ‘love of humankind.’”

For one of our dedicated kitchen volunteers, The Gathering Place has been part of her family's story for more than 20 years.

Her daughter, artist Jordan Casteel, was first introduced to The Gathering Place as a middle school student through a community service partnership with The Logan School. For two years, she volunteered in Betsy's Cupboard, the children's center, and the front desk—an early experience that helped shape her connection to community and, in her words, influenced the humanity captured in her large-scale portraits.

Today, her mother continues that family legacy, spending five hours every Monday volunteering in our kitchen.

“Being in service ... fills my heart and soul.”
