June 10 is National Time Out Day 📅
For 22 years, perioperative nurses have championed the Time Out—a critical pause before every procedure to confirm the correct patient, correct site, and the correct surgery.
This life-saving protocol empowers nurses to speak up and fosters a culture of safety in the OR.
How Time Outs make a difference in the OR:
✔️ Prevent surgical errors through a standardized, team-wide pause
✔️ Empower nurses to raise concerns when something doesn’t feel right
✔️ Strengthen communication among surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and techs
✔️ Raise awareness of the nurse’s role in safeguarding every patient

Nearly 45% of intraoperative hand-offs are interrupted or delayed due to competing demands in the OR.
Given these realities, improving hand-off quality isn’t just important—it’s essential.
Two factors stand out:
✅ Self-efficacy – a nurse’s confidence in their ability to perform an effective hand-off
✅ Hand-off satisfaction – how useful, safe, timely, and complete the process feels
When these are high, patient outcomes improve. But here’s the challenge: many nurses—especially newer clinicians—report low confidence due to limited experience, which can impact communication quality during these critical moments.
A recent study used a descriptive cross-sectional design to explore how self-efficacy, satisfaction, and communication competence intersect among OR nurses—highlighting key opportunities to strengthen both practice and patient safety.
