The decline of Colorado’s bumblebees

One in five Colorado bumblebee species is at risk of extinction. The western bumblebee alone has declined 72% in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Toxic pesticides called neonics, often coated onto seeds, are a primary threat. These chemicals turn entire plants into hazards for pollinators. Colorado has an opportunity to lead by restricting these dangerous seeds.

Here's what you need to know: Neonicotinoids (neonics) are the most widely used neurotoxic insecticides in the U.S. While we know they are decimating bees, birds, and other wildlife, mounting evidence shows neonic pollution may have effects on human health as well, especially for children. Roughly half of Americans are exposed to neonics on any given day—mostly from contaminated water and food. This increases our risks of nerve damage, developmental disabilities in children, and impaired reproductive health, among other harms. 🌍🐝

Colorado has stunning national parks, state parks, and wildlife refuges, where visitors experience incredible mountain views, observe wildlife, and create powerful memories in nature. The Bureau of Land Management plans to auction over 14,000 acres of Colorado public lands in September to energy companies for oil and gas development. That’s the equivalent of more than 10,000 football fields of land.

Individuals and organizations can submit public comments about the plan’s impact before Friday, June 12.

🚘🦌Today, the Wildlife Collision Prevention Act became law in Colorado. Our roadways will soon be safer for motorists and wildlife alike.

Wildlife crossings can decrease crashes with animals by over 90%. Now, thanks to the Wildlife Collision Prevention Act, Colorado will be able to build more of these life-saving structures, making roads safer for deer, elk, pronghorn, mountain lion, bear, and more.

Governor signs wildlife crossing bill into law New law creates funding stream to prevent wildlife collisions.

Join Eagle River Coalition, the Town of Vail, and the Environment Colorado Research and Policy Center for cold beer and macroinvertebrate sampling! Enjoy some discounted Gore Creek IPA and do some hands-on aquatic insect observation in the beverage’s namesake waterway.
